Old's By NANCY LYNN KRZTON Staff Writer A letter from WEST BOUNTIFUL - an West Bountiful girl resulted in a special visit to her school by none other than the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Thomas P. Tip ONeill Jr., last week. It all started when Brighton Miller wrote Rep. Gunn McKay, whose campaign her father, Michael, heads. If you ever have the chance, would you visit my class, she wrote, We cant vote yet, but we would like to meet our Congressman. McKay obliged and brought along a bonus package, ONeill, who had flown to Utah with McKay to assist McKays bid for a sixth term in Congress. The men received a warm welcome from West Bountiful Elementary Schools 550 students when they arrived. Outside, students held a banner of greeting to salute their arrival. Inside, hundreds of children waited in a multipurpose room, chattering excitedly. Posters prepared by the children lined the walls, and the stage was festooned with red, white, and blue streamers. The children gave the congressmen a standing ovation when they entered the hall, and then regaled them with a series of patriotic songs. ONeill, smiling paternally, sang along with the children, seeming to school enjoy the assembly. McKay, introducing the Speaker, said, He is the number three man. If the president and vice president should fall in the ocean, hed be president of the United States. He then told the children the most patriotic thing they could do was to ' SRRINKTERlDEIXjH BRASS PVC PIPE us HEAD POP-U- P brass Heavy-dutAdjustable insert Full, half or quarter y Class 200 for installing lines. ONeill, responding to the Stealth question, said the Stealth prototype was in effect an invisible plane. He explained that when the existence of the plane got to be common knowledge among the news media, the administration knew the story would get out and held a press conference about the plane. The technology is still highly secretive and classified information, he told the children. ONeill posed for pictures with Brighton and signed autographs until an aide pulled him and McKay away to attend another engagement. The visit over, the press packed up and left, and the children discussed the experience among themselves. It was pretty neat to meet the third most powerful man, sixth grader Chris Solberg said. where a number of stolen items were discovered. The stolen items were returned to the store and the girls were taken to Moweda Youth Detention Center in Roy. Two days earlier they allegedly vandalized a neighbors home in Sunset and caused an estimated $4,000 in damages. Police said they had ruptured a water bed, poured cleaning materials and water on the floors and carpeting throughout the home. GREENERY PROFESSIONALS ONeill, who appeared slightly speaking to such a young audience, said, It isnt very often I get awed by audiences, but Ive never spoken to a group of kindergarteners through sixth graders before. And Im thrilled, the politician added. After speaking of the countrys proud history, he thanked Brighton for her invitation, noting, This is a great part of the United States. Were all one great, free, happy country. McKay and ONeill were then subjected to some tough questions about the Equal Rights Amendment, abortion, and the controversial Stealth fighter. Two Sunset CLEARFIELD arrested were Friday and juveniles referred to juvenile court on charges of burglary, theft, and criminal trespassing.
