With just 13 seconds left in the half the Falcons attempted a field goal but a roughing the kicker call gave Clearfield a first and 10 on the 13 yard line. Another field goal attempt was faked and Shane Openshaw completed a pass to Karl Wilson to give the Falcons a 13-- 6 26-ya- 7-- lead with just four seconds left in the half. But four seconds was enough for Hatch to return the kickoff 97 yards and cut the lead to just 2 at halftime. It was a tough game, said Davis Head Coach Ward Sawley. Clearfield is the toughest team weve faced so far this year. 13-1- 28-ya- He said the defense did an excellent job in shutting off Clearfields offense. Sawley said Hatch, Keith McNally, J.D. Ward and Ray Wilcox did a good job in containing the Clearfield running game, which included holding Fredie Cook to just 30 yards for the game. In the second half, David Valentine of Clearfield intercepted a Lloyd pass and several plays later the Falcons were line on threatening on the Davis a fourth down play. But the Falcons failed to connect and the ball went back to the Darts, who kept the ball until Openshaw got the third of his four interceptions of the day. By Bliss Fullmer Staff Writer SALT LAKE CITY We needed this one bad, gasped Coach Gary Hansen of Layton as his Lancers pulled the upset of the year against number-on- e rated Brighton High School. It was a good win for us. - And good it was. Layton had begun the season with a sound beating at the hands of powerful Capital High School of Boise, Idaho, and from that fiasco, the Lancers took on defending champion, Skyline of Salt Lake City. They lost to the Eagles by a mere six points, and shouldnt have. For their n football last appearance in last weekend, Layton was going against the school which had been rated number one in all of Utah High School football, and no one gave the Lancers any chance of winning. chalked up 215 yards rushing, and Vought connected on five of ten passes for 99 yards in the air. Meanwhile the Bengals claimed 98 yards on the ground and 128 passing yards on nine of 22 attempts. We had great defense all accoss the line, smiled Coach Hansen. Weve played three fine ball teams. We are last in Region One, he noted, but weve been there before and ended up on top. Layton is now preparing for Fridays opener against Roy. We arent taking them lightly, he promised. pre-seaso- But Layton has gone that route before. It seems to be a Lancer custom to start slow, and finish strong in football: to take their licks in the early season, and then end up playing for all the marbles. Brighton scored first in the wild lead at halfballgame, and had a time. Layton got its second touchdown in the second half but missed a very important PAT and trailed the Bengals late in the third quarter. When things looked darkest for the Lancers, quarterback Todd Vought lofted a pass to Curt Mockley for 62 yards, and suddenly Layton was within range of the winning score. The magic toe of Bill Cullen did the rest. The Titan game plan worked. Roy was unable to unravel the defense, and its offense sputtered for four quarters. Olympus is not the best team to face Roy this year. The Titans came into Roy, winless after two games, and they lost their last game by 45 points. Roy was gracious to its host by fumbling the opening kickoff on its own 20 yard line, and early in the first quarter, the Titans were one touchdown ahead. The Royals were unable to score until late in the fourth quarter. The Royals must now prepare for action at Layton, this Friday. Layton hyper-extensio- has a 1-- 2 win-los- s record, but defeated powerful Brighton High School, last week on a last minute field goal.
