The pass was too big for its intended receiver, but the secondary receiver, who had gone deep, made a diving catch on the Roy three-yar- d line. Roys defense stiffened, and held the Leopards from scoring on four tempts, but then as the Royals were battling out of the deep hole, Easts Ralph Mitchell stepped in front of a flair-pasfor intended Brad d the ball in for McCaulley, and six points. The doctor, two physical therapists and a couple of para-mediadministered to him for 30 minutes before loading him into an ambulance. During the time he lay helpless on the field, his Royal teammates had time to think of his predicament, and theirs. Lets win this one for Billy, said a linesman, and soon the chant was going down the line of ball players and even into the stands. They missed the try for the extra point, and that miss came back to haunt them in the last minute of the ball game. III At halftime there was silence in the Roy locker room, but not surrender. Determination replaced the despair that was evident out on the field, Coach Jacklin spent his whole effort in challenging his troops to believe in themselves. When they came roaring out of that locker room, it was a different breed of Royal Cats that came back to the field of battle. With 9:07 remaining in the third quarter, Roy recovered a fumble on the East 31 yard line, and got more yardage on a late-hi- t penalty on East. With a n on the East 16 yard line, Wade Jacklin hit Bart Hadley on a quickie pass over center, and he rambled in for Roys first touchdown of the day. first-and-te- Troy Thompson set touchdown with a e receiver Brad McCaulley a victory hug in the after McCaulley caught what proved to be the winning touchdown pass sun Photo By Du muiw against East. A Roys second in- terception on the Roy 23 yard line. Jacklin went deep to Brad McCaulley for a 38 yard pass reception, and Kenny Tulane picked his way down the sideline on a 22 yard aerial, with 2:41 left in the third quarter. Roy ran another series into Leopard territory, early in the fourth quarter, but then fumbled the ball away at Easts 23 yard line, with 4:17 left in the game. Finally, with 1:33 left in the game, Jacklin lofted a floater into the end zone, and McCaulley ran under it to tie the ball game. With the game tied at 20, Coach Jacklin sent in Graham MacFarlane, his field goal kicker, for the P.A.T. attempt, and the ball was right on target. The Leopards moved the ball into Roy territory, but then Troy Thompson picked off a deflected pass and sprinted fifty yards for an insurance T.D. MacFarlane made it four in a row in the kicking department, into the ball and Roy had pulled it off. The Leopards did have a mathematical chance after that. They had just over a minute to move the ball 75 yards, and then make a two point conversion. To gain a tie. Paul Duke, from his safety position, shut the door for good with Roys third interception of the day, and the clock ran out on the Leopards. Meanwhile, Bill Venstra ' tf s was beginning to recover at the University Hospital, but still feeling lousy for the predicament his team was in when they carried him off. He felt even worse to hear the 20-- 0 halftime score, but all of that changed. His friend, Allen Gentry rushed to the hospital, after the game, to announce that Roy had won. It was all the doctors and nurses could do to keep him from jumping out of bed, in jubilation. Venstra was still in seventh heaven, Friday night at his home in Hooper. I still cant believe it, he shouted. We were down 14-- 0 when I left, and I still cant believe it. Then Venstra talked of his injury. They said I had a muscle spasm. I couldnt move nor even talk. I feel OK now. The doctors said I can play next week. Those Royals are alright, arent they? he roared. OTHER INJURIES Venstra wasnt the only man on the Roy injury list. Scott Reid had knee surgery a few weeks ago, and just last week, John Nigon pulled a tendon in his foot and was on crutches at the game. Mark Eggington came up with a sprained ankle, early in the game. All, but Reid will be back in action this week, according to Coach Jacklin. The Coach praised both the defensive and offensive units for the fantastic victory. He was high on his reserves, who filled in so capably for those who were wounded. He was excited about sophomore Tom Nigon, who was called on to fill in for his big brother John, and did a great job. Its great to have kids come off the bench, who want to play ball, said the coach. East High Coach had scouted Roy well, and had put great emphasis on stopping quarterback Wade Jacklin and Wide Receiver, Brad McCaulley. They like to throw the ball, said the Leopard Mentor. For one half of the game, East did a pretty good job in stopping Roys passing game, but then came the second half, and Jacklins three touchdown passes to three different receivers. Jacklin completed 11 of 18 passes in the second half, and made it 13 of 31 and 197 yards for the game. His favorite target was Brad I.-- threat as a runner as he flies to another Royal first down.
