Falcons Roar Back, Beat Slcyview 72-5- 5 Clearfield basketball coach CLEARFIELD Craig Hansen has got to be pleased with the way his team has performed these past few weeks especially during Region 1 play. And after watching his Falcon squad move their league record to 1 by crushing Sky View 5 last Friday, hes been more than happy to explain why. Weve been shooting over 50 percent from the field for the last four straight games, said Hansen, referring to the potent offense. Thats extremely good for a high school team. Our rebounding at both ends of the court has also been super, continued Hansen. Clearfield gave the Lakers their only league loss in the Region 1 opener and will face Roy this Friday at the Royal gym. ' Our goal is to finish one point better than they do, quipped Hansen, lightly referring to the Roy matchup. They like to blow their games open early and we have to stop that in order to win. They have a big size advantage over us especially on the front line, but if we stay close and play good defense, well have a chance. n In a interview, way back in November, Hansen predicted his team would fair well in region play because they wanted to. He said that his teams lack of size compared to the rest wouldnt make that much difference on the high school level if they were in good physical condition, well coached and play as a team. Up to this point, its apparent they have accomplished this, and more. 38-2- 8, . pre-seaso- . , double overtime setback against Layton when they took the floor against Sky View and some thought they may have a let down. But Hansen wasnt worried and' neither were the Falcons. rWe played one of our better games of the year against Layton, but they just out played us," explained Hansen. Its quite a rivalry with these two teams and they were really up for us. 'The Falcons came back strong against Sky View as four players shot in double figures. Leading the way was Troy Nye with 16 followed by Dewey Pratt and Mike Johnson with 14 apiece while Fred Cook added li including a perfect 7 from the foul line. They played us close in the first half so we had to change defenses on them, said Hansen about the n to a zone strategy. No one is selfish with the ball. Everyone looks for the open man and they cover up for each other on defense. The Falcons were coming off a heartbreaking one-and-o- Bonneville drubbed the Royals in rebounding. Roys Rob Thomas was the tallest man on the court at 68, but the Lakers have men at 67 and 66 to challenge inside. To add misery to fact, Roy was without the services of Thomas for most of the ball game. He picked up three quick fouls in the first quarter, and his fourth foul came in the third quarter. He fouled out with 1:06 left in the game. 6-- Bees Dump Darts Davis coach Mike Gardner said thati.,, in order to take the Region 4 crown, you: have to win on the road. They might also say that hes a cut above if he can dribble through a zone press, score at will from 20 feet, rebound against anybody and average 22 points in league play. . And they might even go as far as to say hes got college potential if he can out run anything on the court, block shots and play a whole game non-sto- p without a rest. But theyve got to call him amazing if he can do all this and only stand and this years Layton squad has one such player. Thats right people, at a mere 74 inches Layne Sackett is the shortest forward-cente- r in Region 1 and hes competition although through growing, his skills havent. Just ask any other center in the league. One Bright Spot - In all fairness, Sacketts performance is one of the (inly bright spots in the Lancer campaign this season as Layton has managed just two wins in 14 games. But in recent weeks the Lancers are beginning to gell and Sackett has been the main reason. ; Last Friday against Weber, Sackett scored a game-hig- h 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to keep the Lancers close for the first 30 minutes. Although the Lancers lost, it proved that Sackett could carry the team if he had to. - As of last Friday, the Lancers stand at 3 in region play with six games remaining, and to make the playoffs, Layton will most likely have to win at least five of them. But despite the less than ideal circumstances, Sackett says hes confident that with a few breaks his team can make the state tournament in March. No one on this team likes losing as much as we have this season, said Sackett, But we still have a pretty good chance to make it. Were all super good 6-- C friends. everyone knows their position and our attitude is getting a lot better. Credits Coach Sackett also credits his coach, Doug Moon for giving the team spirit and making them competitive. Were lucky he knows as much as he does, or wed get blown out every game, said Sackett, referring to Moon. He designs our plays for an outside attack because were all good shooters, and lets face it were too short to play inside. He also keeps telling us that he hasnt given up, so we cant either. As a senior, Sackett plans to move on to college for a year before going on a mission. He says hed like to play college ball, but no offers have been given as yet. Im pretty sure I could play college ball somewhere, he said, I have a good outside shot because guard is my normal position and I handle the ball well. Because Sackett is the tallest player on the Lancer squad, hes forced to guard inside against players like Robb Thomas of Roy, Kelly Johnson of Weber ), Cory Sylvester of Bonneville, ) and a host of other players that stand much taller than he does. I try to concentrate on denying them the ball inside, said Sackett .referring to how he defends against the leagues giants. If theyre big like Robb Thomas, I play them close when they come in my zone if theyre quick like Johnson or Sylvester I play them looser, but not so they shoot over me. Sackett says hes learned a lot from playing against these players in the first half of region action and he knows their strengths and weaknesses. Heres what he says about some of those hes played: Robb Thomas He has good fundamentals and he uses his size well, but he gets down on himself and that reflects on his game. We held him to just six points the first time by denying him the ball and if we didnt cool off in the second half, we would have Von the game. Thomas will get better because hes only a junior. , v Cory Sylvester Hes probably the best player in the region. He jumps well and hes quick up and down the court. That makes it tough to stay with him. Hes strong to his left, but not to the right and thats where Ill have to stop him. Kelly Johnson He has good moves to both sides and his attitude is really an asset to him. Hesalsogood against the zone and that makes it tough against our style of defense. Clearfield (S-Troy Nye "He s about the only player that comes close to my size, but hes a great outside shooter and that makes LAYNE SACKETT has been one bright spot in the him tough. They'll be tough to beat next time because we beat them in overtime." Lancer season. (6-8- ), (6-6- (6-6- 2) Sharp-shootin- g Cory Sylvester personally destroyed the Royals with his rebounding strength and his deadly shot from 18 feet. He got a lot of help from Robb Hunt with twelve rebounds, and Norm Haney with ten. Steve Draney made ten points for Bonneville. s. Thomas controlled six rebou.v's in the short time he was in the game. Brad McCauDey was credited with fuur steals, though he had been down all week with the flu. Steve Scholtec had three assists in the game. The Royals as a team shot a frigid 36.2 percent from the field and 67 percent from the foul line. Coach Ted Smith was unhappy with of play, but encouraged to think that his Royals were still in the game, after playing so poorly. We hit only 21 of 58 shots, he Roys poor style sighed, and thats a 'miserable 36 percent. We have been, shooting 49 Our defense percent for the year. wasnt that bad, he continued. We got into early foul trouble and behind, and had to go with a soft trap defense. We forced them to shoot more from outside, and that often initiates a long rebound, which they were able to grab off. We got only 15 rebounds off our missed shots, and they got at least 20 on theirs, he explained. Had we played better, I would have felt better in losing. The Royals experienced some coldshooting in the opening minutes of play, and it may have influenced them throughout the game. Rob Thomas missed on two hard-luc- k shots early, which might have affected his game. We arent out of it yet, theorized Coach Ted Smith. Everyone in the league has at least one loss, and I predict that whoever has an 2 record will win the region championship. Roy will entertain Clearfield this' Friday in its final skirmish of the first half of region play. If we can get past Clearfield, well be in good shape, he promised. 8-- Lancers Lose to Weber After chalking up their first Region 1 win against Gearfield two weeks ago, ( ROYS STEVE SCHOLTEC takes an outside shot against Bonneville. stay behind Ogden and Box Elder with - Z 1 records. . Box Elder didnt waste much time in getting untracked against the Darts as " the Bees soared to a 1 halftime lead. After that, there wasnt much Davis Z could do even thought it managed to battle back to within eight at the end. Foul shots were the key to victory as the Bees made good on 29 out of 36? !" attempts.
