Show Poge 6B, lakeside Review, April 29, 1981 I'.' Snowbird Meet ' mmsmsmm Ends Season Tfce TStile 3 HzktntBV Brilliant sunshine and brilliant performances by the top mogul skiers in the world, highlighted the final stop on the 1981 American Pro Skiing Tour, the World Professional Mogul Skiing Championships at Snowbird April 25. Performing before a crowd of nearly 3,000 spectators, Jerry Douglass, of Snowbird, skiing on his home turf, thrilled his fans with a solid, but close victory over Salt Lakes Frank Beddor, 1981 World ' combined amateur freestyle champion, scoring a 2 decisiion from the team of judges in his final match. Douglass, who has managed to finish no higher than sixth in American Pro Skiing events in 1981, came into the World Championship Event at Snowbird seeded just that, sixth. Douglass has been the second place finisher on the APS Grant Prix point standings for the last two consecutive years and was going for the big one this time. His victory at Snowbird gave his point standings annd his wallet a boost, with the $1,000 first place check, and 25 Grand Prix points. It was enough to gain Douglass third place in the 1981 final standings, with 58 total points, though, behind Snowbirds Brian Reynolds (61 points), who took fifth place honors at the snowbird event, and Boises Stan Kolby, the APS 1981 Grand Prix Champion. The 1981 season Grand Prix title was clinched before the end of the competition at Snowbird, when Kolby reached the round of 16 in the consolation bracket, to gain enough points to clinch the title. Kolby led the standings coming into the event, with a first place, a second place, and a ninth place finish in previous events. His total season winnings in four events was over $2,000 cash. 1980 APS champion, Joey Cordeau., who could get no higher in 1981 than his fourth place finish at the Budweiser World Championships at Snowbird, ended up sixth for the season. Mark Archibald of Layton and Tom Cordova of Ogden tied for seventh place. It was Cordovas best finish ever on the pro tour, and pocketed him $150 and a tie four 16th place in the final standings. Archibald, who has managed a third and a fourth place finish in prior events, had to settle for a final standing of fifth place in the Grant Prix. He is a former National Amateur Mogul skiing champion. Three-tim- e World Champion Karen Huntoon, of Park City, made it four, with a performance at Snowbird that set her again from the rest of the field. Handling the steep, difficult ridge of Snowbirds Silver Fox run, with amazing talent, the phenomenon mastered the moguls like a Porsche handles a freeway. The victory was sweet for Huntoon, who likes steep courses such as Silver Fox, and who had only been on skis a total of 10 days before the event due to an early-seaso- n injury. Huntoons last title was won at the APS finale at Alta in 1980, but her last World Championship was in 1976 so that this victory was a welcome addition to her trophy case. Barbara Cordeau, wife of Joey, finished second to Huntoon in the championships to give her sixth place in the standings just ahead of Huntoons seventh place. Huntoon only skied in two out of four possible Tune-u- p 6cyl. engine ............ 8 cyl. engine : 2750 308 344 . . . ; Includes Spark Plugs For Electronic Ignition , Most cars & trucks up to -- ton CUTRUBUS MOTORS SERVICE DEPT, fWl (HMSIKK; 1711 No. Main, Layton 773-415- 1 races down the hill at last weeks mogul championships at STAN KELLY from Boise, Idaho, Snowbird. Jennifer Wilson of Snowbird skiing as an amateur-statu- s competitior, moved ahead of Snowbasins Bobbie Chambers for the APS season title in the ladies division. Chambers had lead the race coming into the Snowbird championships, but a strong third place finish by Wilson gave her the title by a three-poimargin due to Chambers seventh place finish in the evennt. It was one of the strongest fields of mogul skiing talent ever assembled, and the enthusiasm of the crowd helped cap an exciting season for the American Pro skiing format of Dual Mogul Skiingcompetitions its third successful year as a major pro tour. Mike Hart, tour and'originater, stated, Were excited about the future of dual mogul skiing. Its a thrilling spectator sport which has an incredible potential.
