Show 2E Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Feb. 16, 1983 EncKof an Era Roy Beats Cats One Last Time By BLISS FULLMER Review Correspondent The Royal-BoCat shootout Friday night was more than just another basketball game between rival teams, it was the end of an era that dates back into b the 60s. Sky View and Roy have been going at each other for a lot of years. In the beginning it was an all Bob Cat show. Sky View had an incredible 18 game winning streak against the Royals, until 1977 when Jim McMahon and Fred Fernandes team captured Roys first basketball win on the Bob Cats floor. Since that time the teams traded wins for several years but then Roy has won the last seven games. FriRoy beat Sky View day on the Royal court, and it was the third Royal victory against Sky View this season. Roy and Sky View clashed at the Box Elder Classic in December. The Royals took first place in that tourney. Roy traveled to for an Sky View in important league win. In Fridays game, the Royals scored eight unanswered points in the first two minutes of the final quarter to blow the game open and then traded baskets to the 72-6- mid-Janua- 1 ry Sky View will be divided from one 4A school, to two 3A schools finish and won by 11. Reid Newey led the way with 35 points, while Marc Webster scored 13. Darin Cutler chipped in 12 points to help the Royal cause. I hope they cut off Neweys arm or something, chided Sky Views Coach Clyde Nelson at game time. Then maybe we can beat these guys. Theyve already got us twice this year. I hope we can hold the other players down, added Nelson. Newey will get his points but weve just got to see that he doesnt have a super game. He (Newey) gives the team confidence and (Mike) Harris is one fine shooter. Maybe we can starting next year when it groups with Logan High and the new Cache Valley School. ROY 34 on Feb. 8, the Lakers humiliated the Royals, to take over sole, possession of first place in region one. Roy was never really in the game and the Lakers, behind a 36 point explosion by Sie Moore, never looked back. Reid Newey scored 27 for the Royals, but got in early foul trouble and eventually fouled out late in the game. We never got out of the Starting blocks, lamented Coach Smith. We were a step slow on everything we did. Going down the stretch, the Royals play Weber on the road and then Layton and Clearfield at home. They could still be in contention for the region one title but only with a little bit of help from their friends. Not only must the Royals win their three remaining games, but someone has got to knock off Bonneville to open the door for them. . confuse them with our defense. Roy Coach Ted Smith wasnt taking the Bob Cats lightly. They clobbered Layton and we are coming off a loss to Bonneville, he noted. We need to slow them down. They are a quick team, and they can burn you. They have three physical kids inside and Sky View always plays well in this gym. Roy did slow the Bob Cats down and, as a gift to their coach, the Royals defeated the Bob Cats for their final game of the long and colorful rivalry. 68 BONNEVILLE In a showdown at Bonneville " Baker Accepts 'Kiss of Death' WX Walks Over By DALE PERRENOUD Review Correspondent BOUNTIFUL Our level of intensity has been off ever since we played Bountiful but we are still happy with the win, even if we didnt play our best, remarked Woods Cross Coach Wayne Baker after the Wildcats drubbed Viewmont, In Fridays match-u- p with the region leading Wildcats and the 76-5- 5. region tailing Vikings, the Woods Cross fans saw their team increase their record to 8 and 0 with the win. When they double up on Housekeeper and he still gets 21 points that is a great performance, said Baker. They tortured him all night long, but he still did the job. Being number one should be motivation enough to keep our players up and going in every game. But you play to the level of your competition, every opponent has a better chance to pick off number one. Its really something to knock off the num Baker. and the junior Vikes trimmed 9 points off the Wildcat lead. With East next week and Bountiful the following week at home our end of the season blahs had better be over. We need to play on the court like we are the number one team and act off the court in the same way. Granted, the game was not a pretty sight for either team. Viewmont was playing catch-umost of the time with Kevin Smith dropping in 19 points. Lynn Anderson was the only other Viking to score in double figures with 10. At half, the Wildcats lead by nine points. In the second half the Cats would build that lead up to as many as 30 points. Coming as not much of a surprise, both teams went to their benches to let all of the players get into the action. With a 30 point edge, the p junior varsity team came on staters scoring in double gures. Housekeeper with fi- 21, Race McCleery with 16 (one of his best nights for scoring in a long time), Todd Robinson with 13 and Todd Dyson with 10. We are trying to keep it interesting, enjoying our wins but, not resting now and getting lax. We have shortened some of our practices, but still expect our players to play harder and better, Baker. concluded Coach The kiss of death as Coach Baker refers to the number one ranking has been accepted, but with caution. We play East at East next week, and they are a good team. And the week following is Bountiful at Woods Cross, a rematch of the best basketball game in the state. Bountiful Over Easy on Darts By KENT SOMERS KAYSVILLE Bountiful Coach Mike Hall was unusually calm last Friday night. Why he even smiled at 8:30 p.m., something he usually never has time or the inclination to do on a normal Friday evening. And why shouldnt he have been smiling? His Braves were doing just about everything, right on the basketball floor at' Davis; shooting, playing defense, running the fast break, slowing it down and getting the ball inside on its way to a 8 win over the Darts. 77-4- ROY BIBLE CmjRCn 2066 W. 6000 S. I just told my girls to just work the ball for an open shot and then to play tough defense. I feel they did OK cause Davis only picked up three points on us in that last two minutes. With a lead to start the second half, the Darts put on a big push to close the door on the Braves as Traci Belt came out hot. She fired three straight shots that touched nothing but the bottom of the net, and that gave the Darts a quick lead and Bountiful called a time out. five-poi- nt nt She passed outside to Cheri Baxter, who had been hitting from the side of the kay, and her basket fell through just as the horn sounded. For the Braves it was Shana Knudson with 15 points and Julie Rampton with 11 plus 13 rebounds that led the stats sheets.
