Sure, all of you know how to do it. Or do you really? Ph. TRY TO explain to this guy how a batters average is determined by how many men are on base and what they do. Lets talk facts. If a batter hits a routine fly ball, that is caught, to an outfielder its an out. That means the for the batter has an official at bat, and is hitting 376-345- or 773-424- 3 1 Sale Ends April 28, 1 979 0-- 1 , ' game. But if by chance there is a runner on base when the ball 1 is caught and that same runner tags up hnd advances on1 the play then it is called a sacrifice fly. To the scorer then,,:r on the day. that batter was never at bat and he is ! 0-- WATCH A game on television and the announcers will indicate when a batter is trying for the old sacrifice. Does that mean the coach at third base has a sign for the sacrifice? I dont think the batter is trying to sacrifice, hes trying to get on base. Another great name for an out is fielders choice. If theres a runner on first and you hit the ball to the shortstop and he throws it to second for the out its a fielders choice. Not a hit. Wait a minute you didnt tell the guy not to throw it to first. If the scorer notes it as a at the plate, but if he fielders choice the hitter is throws to first gets you and the runner advances to second its a sacrifice and youre hitting , EilL'LTJ fi KJSIl WE! 0-- 0-- ) 1 ) fci- BASEBALL NEEDS to get as many hits as they can so they thought up these little rules, such as the sacrifice. After all what other sport can you think of where if you get on base three out of ten tries youre a star. Why not give the batter a hit every time he reaches all they didnt get him out.
