Show WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, DECEMBER 27, 1979 NORTH DAVIS LEADER, DECEMBER 27, 1979 County Gals DF UK Hold Basketball y Tournament Ccusiteil Favorites in Region BasMall By DAVE WIGHAM - CLEARFIELD Last year was billed as a so called down year for Clearfield girls basketball. After all Margo Jones was starting five underclassmen. If that was a down season watch out for this year. ALL OF the players are back off the club that placed second in the region a year ago. They lost both games to region champions Viewmont by one point each time. It's no wonder that the coaches in Region One are. indicating that the Falcons are loaded and will be extremely tough to compete with. This success hasnt come easy though as Margo has built up the program. Several years ago Jackie Beene led the Falcons to a state title and word is the Clearfield gals are in line for another first place trophy. NUCLEUS OF the club is in the two captains, Karleen Peart and Becky Spaulding. Karleen returns for her senior year following a great junior performance in which she averaged about 28 points per outing. By DAVE WIGHAM - CLEARFIELD Basketball fans in the county will be treated again this week when the girls stage their first Davis County Invitational event the last few days of the week. see her outside. BECKY IS a 5'9 guard who likes to get out and run and picks up most of her points with layups. She is considered the spark plug of the group. The Braves field a veteran team which is quick and who likes to run while the Roy club features a young and inexperienced team. Four games will be played both Thursday and Friday with the two championship games being held on Saturday. All six county teams were invited to the tournament and all but Woods Cross will participate. The Wildcats simply felt they didnt want to participate. THIS WAS a shame since the top clubs from last year would have been in the event. Viewmont was in the finals of the 4A ranks while the Cats were in the finals of the 3A. It would have been great to have all the teams in the event. The tournament will begin with a 4 p.m. game on Thurs- re- turning player which gives them a great deal of experience and depth. A knee injury has slowed her up a bit but she's back and playing hard. ANOTHER CINDY, this one Clark, is a good outside shooter who can be used when opponents go the zone defense look. Little is known about the Bees club, but they would have to be great to beat the Falcons. . In the final game at 8: 30 the Layton club squares off with the Viewmont team. These two have met already this season with the Vikes winning but not as easy as many expected. THE TWO winners would face each other on Friday at 5:30 p.m. with the first day losers playing at 4 p.r.t. At 5 10 she can play inside but with her shooting touch dont be surprised to Jodi Tillman, Jennifer Beene and Lori Hutchinson. COACH JONES is optimistic about the club this season and well she should be. With all the top players back from a year ago they will certainly be heard from before the state event is over.
