Show t I REFLEX JOURNAL BULLFTlfl LEADER, OCTORER 14. 1982 The offense wasn't spectacular, neither was the defense, but the 1714 win over Highland builds confidence for Layton's remaining two games. Still a Glimmer of Playoff Hopes ameers Keith Duncan Journal Sports With Weber coming to town on LAYTON and Clearfield being here the folFriday night lowing Tuesday, the Lancers will be hoping that the same kinds of fortunes they had against Highland carry through until the final curtains close on the 82 campaign. LAYTON POSTED their second win of the win over the 4 season with a cherished Highland Rams, their second win this season over Region Four opposition. All weve got to do is go out like Coach Gary (Hansen) has asked us and just have some fun," said Layton's senior fullback. Matt Austad. "Thats kinda been my motto from the very beginning. 17-1- Shoot for Second Or Third ALSTAD, WITH the help of a better than average performance from the offensive line, gained nearly a hundred yards against Highland on the ground. It averaged out to be nearly 9.5 yards per carry. Brad Merrill, the Lancer quarterback, plugged for the line too. Against Highland the line played one of their best games all year. I had pretty good time to pass and the holes for the backs were opening up most of the time. Matt went 42 yards one time on a dive play. Any time you've got holes that big. you've got to be doing the job in my opinion. Everything seemed to click against Highland," said Merrill. IT WAS MERRILLS touchdown pass to score Jerry Cooper that provided the against Highland. Later it was Lynn Bell who snagged a Ram pass deep in Layton territory that saved the victory. Layton's other scores against the Rams came from a TD run from Austad and a field goal from kicker Mike Petroff. 20-ya- "I PERSONALLY didnt perform that well in our 7 loss to Bonneville," said Austad a few days after the Highland victory. "I felt I needed to come alive against Highland and get 8-- ready for our remaining games against Weber and Clearfield. But I would have never done it were it not for the job the line did." I think we have what it takes to get Weber. They lost to Bountiful and I hope theyre down," were more of the comments of Austad. THE KIDS have a good chance to win, I Darts - Wildcats Championship Dreams Keith Duncan Reflex Sports - KAYSVILLE Emotionalism has played a key role in Davis march to unquestionable football prowess in 1982. AGAIN THIS week against Woods Cross, Friday 7:30 p.m. under the lights in Davis stadium, there are even more significant emotional building blocks that Ward Sawley and his assistants will use to jack the squad. Against Viewmont it was a burned V and outspoken comments." The following week it was a factor that Sawley had never beaten the Highland Rams and even more importantly the kids wanted to prove the Viking trounce was no fluke. Against East it was for top honors in Region Four and even against Bonneville last week, with such a short week to prepare, it was revenge for what took place a year before. "IF WE DONT get jacked up, we're going to have problems Im afraid," said Sawley last Monday as his team prepared for the Wildcats. "There are a lot of positive factors with Woods Cross coming to town. Were playing a county school again which alone itself causes a little bit of stir. If we win we will cement our chances for a state playoff berth. Also, a win would assure us of at least a tie for the league title. Those things give the coaching staff something to motivate with." I DONT THINK we could overlook Woods Cross in any way. Just because theyve only won one league game doesnt matter. They whipped Bountiful which in itself almost says it all. A few bad breaks in their other games have prevented them from being 3-- 0. Woods Cross has got the kind of people that can beat anyone in this league. I think theres a good chance that (Doug) Sendobry could play. (Sendobry is the heart of the WX defense). He was at Ogden, though he didnt dress, he wasnt in a cast. Hes one of the blue-chi- p players in the league." SAWLEY continued to say, Ourbig advantage is having them at home. Brian Bock, a significant leader on the Dart defense, stated, Well work harder this week than weve ever worked before. And thats because weve been building up for this week all year long. it all week that were gearfor the championship, said Bock. ing up Bock contributed a few more thoughts. No one could recognize our defensive line enough, said Bock who plays a linebacker position behind them. Theyre faster than I am. All the defensive lineman are the fastest s guys on the team. They get in peoples so quick that they mess everything up. You may have noticed that our opponents are fumbling a lot, well, thank the defensive line for that. (Bonneville fumbled six times against Davis in the Darts 20-- 8 victory.) "WELL HEAR back-field- JEFF SAMPSON, one of the defensive lineman, was cautious, If we dont play well, we wont win. Mistakes almost killed us against Bonneville. I almost went to Woods Cross. All my old friends and my cousin go there, so it would be nice to win. CLAIN WHITE, a Dart defensive end, had another superb performance against Bonneville. He combined with the rest of the crew to help hold the Lakers scoreless in the first half. The Lakers, who Coach Sawley said were one of the finest teams his club has played so far, executed well against Davis but key turnovers which Davis took advantage of, killed them in the end. "THEIR ONE score came off a well executed pass, said Sawley, But when they tried it later on, we intercepted it. White, who is also a runningback, has been confined to defense only in recent games because as his coach says, Clain is very valuable to us at defensive end and we like to have him fresh. played well against the Lakers scoring one touchdown and also a conversion. , Chris Stevenson appears like he is ready to on a regular basis enter back into the line-u- p after missing a few games with an injury. DANNY WILSON two-poi- nt AGAINST Bonneville we didnt have the prep time were used to, said Sawley. But the kids still got reved up for it because of what they did to us the year before. Our kids have got a lot of pride in what theyre doing and they wanted to beat Bonneville. The Darts scored six points in the first half against the Lakers and could have had a couple more. Ryan Smith fumbled on the two yard line on a first and goal situation but came back later to snatch a Bonneville fumble and take 25 yards for a Davis score. RICK SECRIST added Davis only other score on a short quarterback burst. hope they feel that way, said Hansen. Weve been in every game so far and had a good chance to win." Hansen was pleased with a number of the performances against Highland including Merrill's 5 for 15 passing. The percentage may not have been there but Brad did hit some key passes when he had to. a chance for a state playoff berth with Region One giving four teams a chance to enter the playoff for the state title. If Layton were to dispose of Weber and beat Clearfield the following week there could contie for fourth ceivably be a three or four-wa- y place. If Clearfield and Weber fail to win their final two games and Layton were to get theirs. LAYTON STILL has m 4-- A then the Lancers would automatically advance as the fourth place team. But in all three of Layton's league games, the Lancers have held their opponents scoreless until at least mid-wa- y through the third quarter. : , i t Like Merrill has said, "Weve had some breaks that have been tough to' live with", but on . the other hand weve had some breaks that have kept us in some games." : : Roy Visits Falcons A Royal Clash Keith Duncan Bulletin Sports their finest game of 82 in beating Weber but Roy probably had their worst in losing to the Warriors 20-9-- 6 0. - CLEARFIELD Its the top of the ninth, race and the last turn in two-mil- e quarter-hors- e NFL an of the warning game. two-minu- te THE 1982 PREP football year all boils down to a couple of final outings. For Clearfield the hopes of obtaining at least one of the four playoff berths still appears bright. But for Brent Hancock and his crew, if playoff hopes want to get any brighter they must first contend with their good ole rivals from Roy. The Falcons and Royals will take after each other this Friday night in Clearfield at 7:30 p.m. THE ROYALS need a victory as much as Clearfield, because with it will come a state playoff berth almost assuredly. Roy presently stands 1 in league while Clearfield represents slate. a said senior Its a must-wi- n situation, Clearfield runningback, Dean Foulger. Clearfield perhaps had nt Emotions will be running high and they better be with a game like this, said Hancock, Roy knows they cant afford a loss with Sky View coming up next. And of course if we cant win our last two games, wed have no chance at all. THERE IS little question that the Falcons gained some confidence in their 27-1-4 victory over Cottonwood during the short week that UEA took place. The 27 points were racked up in the first half, in fact 14 of them coming with three or four minutes into the game. We executed well and did some things against the Colts we havent done all year, said Hancock, Cottonwood may not be the best team weve played thus far, but they presented a good challenge. THE WILDCAT mentor made a few comments prior to this Fridays game in Kaysville. I have all the respect in the world for their team, but shame on their coach, Ward Sawley, for trying to sandbag everyone into thinking they weren't going to be that good in preseason. some guy running down the sideline. Talking about having to play and prepare for. the Davis double wing, Eldracher noted, I like playing them. Its hard to prepare for them but at the same time its fun. Im against them so this will decide. 1- -1 THE DARTS are quick, they hit hard, get off the ball, and they swarm on opponents. But if I had to pick one word to describe them it would be relentless. They just keep after you. Theyll run that double win for six plays gaining nothing and then on the next play youll see TALKING ABOUT having to play Davis on Friday night, the coach stated, I told the kids to go watch their night game with Bonneville. These seniors have never seen Davis at night. We sent them there so they wouldnt be surprised how dark it is this Friday. About his star defensive player, Doug Sendobry, the coach said, Doug wont practice at all this week. Hell be resting the foot. Hell suit up on Friday and will be ready for emergency work. That means if we have a chance to win, then well play him. If not, well rest him for another week for Highland. our defense and he was just coming around as a runner. Eldracher echoed about attitude, Since we lost to East, the kids have been down.
