You see, those first three games against some of your Davis County rivals were a sight to see. You guys were just plain serious about winning and at the same time respected your opposition enough that it humbled you to do the little fundamental things it takes to win. SOME OF my friends have told me that you've lot down a little bit when it ws time to play Clearfield, but 1 really can't believe it's happening to a bunch of guys that gave it their all' in those opening games. Tell you what guys, I still believe in ya. I've done some figuring and in your three losses in a row now, you've only lost by 18 points. I think its about time to remcmcr how humble you were in those first few games and step up and give Bonneville the game of their lives. Youve got to remember what they did to you in the last seconds last year. YOU know the consequences if you win and lets not think about what happens if you lose. Id like to talk about all the glory and pomp that goes with getting into the playoffs, because Ive seen some of the fellows before you get into those coveted things. But right now, you guys have got to concentrate on giving Bonne ville, and then Weber the next week, all they can handle and ten times more. The things that stand out in my mind most about those victories over Viewmont, Bountiful and Woods Cross was the agressiveness you displayed for 48 minutes. You didnt let up. THAT AGGRESSIVENESS as evident in how the coache? youd beaten, talked about you after those games. I can remember Kim Peterson of Bountiful telling one of my friends that those Layton kids are a lot better team than last year, mostly because they dont give up. A Viewmont coach said to my friend that Layton had one thing on their minds, and thats winning. But as I sat and observed against Highland the other night, those things theyd say about you were not evident all the time. Part of the time, yes, but not for 48 minutes which it takes I guess to beat good teams like Highland. OFFENSIVELY that just outplayed ya and they suprisingly out hit you. That just isnt characteristic of what went on in those opening games. They charge us to get into these games and to tell you the truth, they couldnt charge me enough to see you guys play. Why dont you go out and belt Bonneville a good one and have everything feeling just like I do. I believe in ya. OFFENSIVELY, youre going to have to be sharp against the Lakers who are known this year for their defensive ability. They havent scored a lot of points this year, but they havent given up very many either. If Tom Kidd, Mike Tucker, Brian Bailey and the guys who block up front for them are up for it, I know youre going to be ranting and raving in the bus all the way home from Ogden. There have been a few of you that chill my spine everytime I see you play, youre the same guys that gave it your all in the first couple of games. A big explosion would take place if all of you played like that. i New Season Opens For Fdmns By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - A season with a seaCLEARFIELD son began last week here and if the Falcons can clip Box Elder and Roy in their final two games, the idea ought to be patented. THE NEW season preceeds the frusrecord can tration that a previous only bare out. But the new season began with a practice game and solid victory to go along with it, a 4 whipping of Davis County foe, Bountiful High. -5 24-1- TOM WOOD, Clearfields gutsy little runningback who collected nearly 100 yards rushing in the victory, summed it up best afterwards, Why not think of it as a new season, theres nothing to lose by it. Its the best way to put some of our frustration behind us. This win gives us a lot of confidence going into the Box Elder game, the most important game in our new season. in league play THE FALCONS are and a win over the Bees at home this Friday would make a playoff picture appear much brighter. Likewise for the Braves, they are also in Region Four and a win over Woods n Cross would enhance their life tremendously. IT WAS Clearfields first win at home 83 and asst. Coach Craig Murray voiced his feelings about that by saying, I hope these kids remember this feeling for a long time. Another asst., Craig Hansen stated, Its about time we celebrated around here. It was our turn. HEAD COACH Brent Hancock stated, We showed only 60 percent against Bonneville, but tonight it was a little over a 100 percent. Its a new season for us. The future can do a lot to douse the adversity and 1- post-seaso- t frustration this club has been through. Our record is no indication of how good a team we are. THE FALCONS had their moments of offensive and defensive brilliance. Defensively you could pin some medals on the Falcon crew for efforts they rendered in both the first and final quarters. The first key defensive stand was after Jeff Parry had scored from one-yar- d out with 1:47 left in the opening period. RATHER THAN let the momentum shift, the defensive line nailed Spencer d gain and afterwards Zigich for a the defensive secondary surveyed Rob Faddis passes with no allowances at all. After theyd got the Braves to surrender the ball, the Falcons notched another score on the board just three big plays later. That made it 14-- 0 and a lead Clearfield never relinquished. The proudest of the defenses efforts came in the final quarter where the Braves held the ball through most of it. After a Brave punt deep in Falcon territory, the punt was fumbled and recovered by Bountiful on Clearfields 21 yard line with 6:15 left to play. After Zigich had moved it to Clearfields 11 pick-uGreg Folk yard line on a and his partners got fed up with it and dug one-yar- rd p, in. FOLK CRASHED through the line and sacked Zigich for a yard loss on the next play. Next it was Randy Nicholas nailing a Brave Ballcarrier at the line of scrimmage. The third down attempt proved no betterand finally on fourth down, Faddis was sacked by Kim Thurgood to end a scoring opportunity. Only a long 40 yard pass from Faddis to Matt Shelby in the next drive was all Bountiful could really cheer about. But that too was short lived as Jeff Parry intercepted the next pass to nail the coffin shut. THE OFFENSIVE too, had their moments for Clearfield. After the first quarter TD, Clearfield came back on their very next series with Parry finding his tight end Troy Barber for 25 yards under a lot of pressure. Jared Martin then broke loose for 18 yards around the end and to start the second quarter, Hal Moore scampered in from 7 yards out for the second TD. Mark Adams PATs for good on both. After Bountifuls Faddis had had his best hour in finding the target on four long receptions, the Braves made it 14-- 7 with Zigich scoring from 14 yards out in the second quarter. Matt Bombards kick was good. BUT MOMENTS after the Braves had scored and after a tipped interception by Kelly Hatch and Greg Folk, Parry hooked up with Troy Van Buren on a 50 yard touchdown bomb that was executed to perfection. About that scoring bomb, Van Buren remembered, Weve run it a couple of times this year, but tonight it worked to perfection. I remembered Coach Hancock telling me that I was going to get one before the game and it turned out just like he said it would. Parry thought the key on the play was the almost-perfeblocking of the line. FOR THE evening, Parry had one of his finest games of the year in the passing department. Afterwards one Bountiful assistant noted he hadn't seen a prettier pass play in quite awhile until the Parry-Va- n Buren bomb. After a John Evenson rushing TD with 2:19 left in the third period, it was an field goal by early fourth quarter Adams for Clearfield that helped put the game in safer perspective for the Falcons. IT WAS Clearfields Ed Naylor that commented after the game, Coach (John) Flint told us not to come off the field unless wed done the best we could do. It was kinda nice to do just that. The walk to the locker room after the game was the shortest Ive experienced this year.
