Clearfield stayed close to the Braves with Curtis Rampton placing third and Ray Gelhard and Russ Standforth taking ninth and tenth respectively. LEADING THE club is 6 4 Mik McCarron who is carrying an 18 point scoring average around with him. The height or scoring doesnt stop here either. The Bees also have 6 4 Greg Heaton up front and 65 Robert Ash, a great rebounder. Guard Scott Hill is averaging 13 points a game while his running mate in the backcourt Eric West is pouring in 15 points an outing. Key to the Davis club continues to be the play of their big man Wes Coonradt. As Wes goes so go the Darts, they need him at both ends of the Wes is floor. Scoring-wis- e around the 13 point per game mark, teammate Jeff Emery is leading the Darts with a 14 point average. LAST WEEK in the Ogden win though, the Darts got balanced scoring from Mike Mounteer, Brad Petersen, Coonradt and Emery. The same type of balance will be needed this week in the Bee contest. Davis is getting tougher each week. They want to stay in the position of securing a state berth which means a win over the Bees. Evan Fisher of Viewmont was second in the race, Mark Chicado of Clearfield sixth and Mike Tepe of Layton HAD club at all. Several weeks ago the Darts were in the middle of the pack and fading near the bottom. Coach Mike Gardner must have reminded the troops about all the tradition that goes with the school in this sport, how a state tournament without the Darts is like the Superbowl without Dallas. Whatever happened the Dart players took it upon themselves to get out of the pack and secure themselves a state berth. The topper was the victory last week over a very strong Ogden club when the Darts used their home floor to win and pull themselves above the crowd. WITH THE win, Davis is now a firm fourth place, two games ahead of the rest, two games behind the Tigers and placed tenth. LAYTON put themselves in great shape to capture the league hoop title with a great overtime win last week against rival Clearfield. The win pulled Layton up into a three way tie, with Clearfield and Roy, for the league lead. With two games left in the region action the Lancers are in good shape. first ob- stacle to overcome in earning the roundball crown and the Braves are number one on the n list for the Lancers. In the first go round the Braves stunned the Lancers with a five point setback on the Lancer floor. THE BOUNTIFUL-Layto- n game was played Tuesday, which is a day after this article was written and a day after you read it. In any event that game is history. On Friday the Sky View club invades Lancer gym in a battle that is a must win for both clubs. Sky View must win to avoid being caught by the red hot Braves which would mean a playoff to determine the state berth, while Layton must win to stay even or ahead of Roy and Clear-- , get-eve- On start of the second round in league action one might have thought the Lancers would have the advantage in these last two games but both Bountiful and Sky View are playing good ball. Last week the Braves knocked over Viewmont while the Bobcats were beating a good Weber team on the Warriors floor. Most coaches around the league are pointing a finger at the Layton crew. They feel that the Lancers have the best team in the region. As one rival coach put it, WeU play anyone in the region again except Layton, they are a great team. LAYTON HAS all the ingredients of a cham MIKE Hall sum- - up his feelings when he noted, It would be a shame for these kids not to go tournament season. Anderson is a smooth shooting center who has the ability to either shoot from the fifteen foot range or drive to the hole. At both ends of the floor, Anderson is probably the best center in the league. The bench is thin by their coaches own admission yet the Lancers play smart defense and keep their big people around for as long as possible. good guards who can handle the ball and shoot from the outside. They have a good big man in the middle who can score and then flanking that center is a power forward and a quick forward. Dave Burke, Tracy Chatwin and Willy Ferneau give Coach Doug Moon three guards who offer something special in their own right. Chatwin came through last week in the Clearfield win with a couple of pressure foul shots. SKY VIEW has a couple of good players in their corner but they lack the overall team talent of the Lancers. Guard Todd Stevens can bring clubs out of zones quicker than you can blink an eye and Lance Lindley is a power under the boards. FORWARDS Brandon Flint and Matt Stireman give the Layton crew a different look at each position. Flint is a powerful player who likes the physical contact under the boards and usually comes out on the winning end while Stireman is as quick a forward as there is in the state this year. Stireman is especially effective against a man to man defense, with his size, quickness and shooting touch, he is a handful for anyone. A Lindley against Flint matchup underneath is something to watch since both like the contact and neither will back away from it. Anderson is the key to this win. If he stays out of foul trouble, he could be the sore spot in the Bobcats side. (Had he been a member of a minority group perhaps his chances would have been better-becau- se otherwise ugly accusations could have been made.) The continuing spectacle of only one player, or two, being voted into the Hall by the media cries for action to scoring. Dan Bell and Alan Meldrum also got in the scoring parade as the Braves let their youngsters play in the closing minutes. IN THE first meeting with the Roy club, the Braves beat themselves. Roy starts three small guards and time after time in the first meeting the big people from Bountiful would pull down the rebounds only to see these three steal it from them for the easy bucket. Jon Nickerson hit a career high 21 for Roy against the Braves last time out. Roy has a good inside puck with Mark Sindle and their leader is guard Fred Fernandes who is at the top of the league in scoring. BOUNTIFUL HAS been playing strong the past few weeks, no one is surprised to see them win anymore. They want a state berth and will fight down to the last minute to get one. Also theyll keep a finger crossed for some outside help. ' i J qualifications being voted in? Thats better than leaving out deserving players-- as is done J today. After all, whats the great harm in a player or two with The Hall of Fame for Major League "'outcome would rest heavily on who controlled the boards. Bountiful owned them, led by 18 rebounds from senior Mike Nelson who is playing great basketball at this time. Not only did he go to the boards hard but he poured in 14 points, a season high for him. Blaine Benard suffered through an off night for him. He missed more than twice, yet the other players picked up the scoring slack. Jim Perkins was on the end of fast breaks to end with 16, Nelson had 14, Benard was at 14, Scott Stewart finished with 13 mainly from the foul line and junior Clark Mabey added 12 to give the Bountiful club Sophomores This past weekend the top wrestlers in the state converged on the University of Utah campus to decide just who was the best in the ranks. and SEVERAL THINGS stood out in this reporters mind. First of all the state tournament is the only tournament in the state that doesnt have a true seeding meeting. Every tournament has a seeding meeting, a place where each coach goes in and brags up his wrestlers in order to get them a great seed. This way the top two men arent supposed to meet until the finals. IN THE state tournament though the seeds are drawn up by region finishers. Before the event gets underway each region knows which winners will get the top seed in the state meet. An example of this was in the heavyweight division where Henry Williams of East was a participant. Henry lost only one match the entire year, a loss which placed him third in the region meet. Even so had this state meet been another tournament, Henry would have been the top seed, but not at state. AS A result of this method a lot of finals were between third and fifth place finishers. The true top seeds mel early in the event. The state people should get together and decide which wrestlers should get the top seeds. They say it takes too long. Why take the time, its only the biggest event in these wrestlers lives. ANDY BOEHME of Woods Cross gets this years hard luck award as the likeable senior won his first two matches in the tough heavyweight division, but then had to withdraw from the event with an injury; Andy had been wrestling extremely well the past few weeks, taking second in the tough region event and then gaining the semifinals in the state meet. HAD HE been healthy no one knows if he could have won the title or not. He certainly worked hard enough and deserved at least the shot at the title. Helicopter Service Costs County $8,800 - FARMINGTON Davis County has been billed for $8,800 for services rendered by a private helicopter service during a chase of two armed men who were wanted for theft, kid- napping and attempted criminal homicide. SHERIFF BRANT Johnson informed Comm. Ernest Eberhard, who represents the commission over the Sheriffs Department, that the money to pay the bill is not included in the departments budget. One person was apprehended in the Dec. 23 shooting spree. A second suspect later stole a pickup and is believed to have fled the state. He is still at large.
