Use a systemic insecticide-fungicide. As a rule I avoid to poison using try sprays if at all possible, but I find Ive never been able to get away without spraying the roses. Add a shot of fish fertilizer to the spray mixture to help make the foliage strong and leathery. If you are a bit of a fanatic about the size of your rose blooms, then you will want to disbud them. This is the process of removing some of the flower buds while they are still small, so that the remaining buds will develop flowers of a larger size. As well as roses, carnations, that rest, dont forget those little housekeeping chores that should be done to maintain the health and productivity of your backyard plot for the duration of the growing season. For example, dont forget to tend to your roses if you want g a supply of perfect blooms. About now you could give your roses a feeding, using a rose food and following directions carefully. Resist the temptation to overfeed, as gluttony does not become any planting in your backyard garden. What happens is the rose bush or whatever is sent into a frenzy of lush growth, and grows all succulent and sappy, with a long-lastin- ANIMAL SHOW and dahlias peonies, chrysanthemums are most commonly disbudded. Octane ratings, on yellow labels, are now required to be posted on all gas pumps. The Federal Trade Commission has found that many consumers are overbuying gas--this, gas with a higher octane rating than they need. Overbuying wastes money and energy, and the additional lead found in higher octane gases just adds to air toes. TO COMBAT insect invasion in the vegetable patch, I pretty well stick to a derris dust, sold under various brand names. Derris is a source of rotenone, which leaves no poisonous residue for man on the plants. Use the derris dust on raspberry flowers to prevent damage to the berries by the raspberry maggot. Use also on strawberries, and on cabbage, cauliflowers and broccoli to keep them insect-free.
