Show f' I p JJW WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, FEBRUARY 11,1981 eeting Slated For TCJOnFei). 18th TCJ stands for Teaching Children Joy. In the fall of 1980, Linda and Richard Eyre published a book by that name, which has the thesis that, next to love, the most important thing parents can give their young children is the capacities for joy. THE BOOK categorizes joy into 15 units (from the mental joy of imagination and creativity to the social joy of sharing and service) and sets forth guidelines as to how parents can actually give these joys to their children. The premise is that it is more important to teach a how to be well adjusted, how to be happy than how to read or how to three-year-o- ld but to use it as a curriculum we need the detail of stories, games, activities and other ideas." TCJ, A organization, was formed to add these new dimensions to the book Teaching Children Joy." It operates like a large parent coop where parents essentially produce materials and share their cost. When parents join TCJ. they e memberpay a small, ship fee and receive a membership card and the introductory unit lesson plans. From then non-prof- it one-tim- on, they pay monthly dues which cover the costs of developing. creating, printing and distributing the materials. GROUPS CAN be built gra- - dually. with one or two mothers joining initially and -then adding other mothers to their group after they are func-- ; . tioning. She was just a year out of high school, and had a year of college at the U. of U. to her credit, when she headed for Salt Lake City to take her beautician exams. It was the coldest, bluest fall day when I went down for my exams, she said. Confronting the who "man-in-char- couldn't believe a little 108 old was going pound, to open her own shop didnt help either. But she passed her exams and with financial backing from her father, opened her own shop on Main Street in Layton right next to Kowley Drug. A year later she and Zene were married. Several years later, when the children (two girls and a boy) began to arrive she moved the business into the family home in Svracuse. I BROUGHT the first per manent wave machine into Layton, Virginia announced. In those days, women who were not blessed with curly locks, were hooked up to an ominous-lookin- g contraption with clamps dangling from it which were attached to the hair. Her clientele included wives of prominent Davis County doctors, attorneys, bankers, etc. I had many steady customers and made lots of good friends, she reminisced. ON HER days off Virginia says she loves to party with my girls, referring to her daughters Shauna Lynn Nederhauser and Shamra Jones with whom she has a very close relationship. The ham and beef loaf that follows is one that Virginia has used for special occasions since before she was married.
