I guess I was :as - close to a pioneer, about, half pioneer. My . dad was born here in 1854, ; and I was born in 1890. We . were right in the midst of just rough work: cattle, sheep , and .farming. I don't know how to answer that question. I didn't have much, advantage that I can see. I never went to school, not at least too much. They pushed me through, to get rid of me I think. But I don't know how to answer that question." Joyce VVashbern: "I wouldn't have been, not in this country. It is too dry and too hot." CEDAR CITY -Through the years, July has become known as the patriotic month in the United States and in Utah. Earlier this month we celebrated In-dependance In-dependance Day, and we remembered our first forefathers and their quest for freedom. Now we have celebrated Pioneer Day this past Saturday and our forefathers' faith and courage as pioneers , conquering the west and settling this land we now enjoy as home. The Record has great respect for the pioneers land we pay tribute to ''them . and all of their contributions and achievements which they have left behind. Along with our respect, the Record was curious to know w whether or not we, today, would have accepted the pioneer challenge, and we sent our roving reporter to ask the people on the street about that. This . week's question is: "Would you like to have been a pioneer, and why or why not?" Loren Whetten: "I was one. I was born in Mexico which was frontier country. I was also part . of the group of Mormons . that were driven out of , , Mexico at the time of the u revoultion down there.' , We were out here as . refugees for two or three years and went back and saw most of that Mexician revolution. So you just happen to pick an old-timer, a real pioneer. That's what I'd call it. "When I was a little kid I I helped build one of the I log houses we lived in. I led the horse that pulled up the logs." Lamont McDonald: "Yes, I think so. I think I would have liked that mostly because it allowed freedom of expression, not necessarily verbal expression of life style, ! but freedom to live as you saw fit, freedon to take care of the immediate necessities and survive as best you could." Sandra Eells: "Yeah, it would have been alright to have been a pioneer because I like to rough it any way." Sandra Bowman: "No I don't think I would have. We were just commenting com-menting about that last night. We were out doing some yardwork, and' physically it would be so ' draining. I think we're reallv sDoiled. We are not |
