Show Board to appoint citizens to study overcrowding . PAROWAN A study committee of 15 persons will be chosen to investigate ways to alleviate Cedar High School's " overcrowding problem. Thus was the decision of the Iron County School Board Tuesday as it met in Parowan. ! The committee will be selected from a list of over 50 names, with consideration of diversity of background and population proportion in the school district. Dr. Kent Meyers, a SUSC professor was named as chairman of the committee. November 1982 was set as a deadline to submit findings and recommendations to the Board. To help in its study, the committee will be presented the enrollment and .financial figures, along with recommendations already discussed by the Board. Among the recommendations to be passed onto the committee are the feasibility of constructing a new high school, the possibility of implementing year-round school and double sessions and study of transporting students to Parowan High School. Adding facilities at Cedar High School and constructing a vocational complex will also be considered. It was the general consensus of the Board that for the next two or three years the school district could get by with minor adjustments. Superintendent Clair Morris outlined the schedule of bond payments until the mid 1990s and drew attention to the fact that in the 1989-90 school year the bond payment would drop from $1,325,481 to $550,557. Morris felt that before then it would "be impossible to construct a new high school and impose an additional 20 mills." The current mill levy is 45.50. According the Vernile Matheson, Cedar High School principal, the school will begin an eight-period day for the 1982-83 school year. Teachers will be expected to teach six periods, one more than at present, with one period for lunch and the other for preparation. Their school day also would include a half-hour before and after classes for preparation. Recommendations for the present include increasing the teacher-student ratio from its present 24 to 1, using every room every hour and, if necessary, by 1985, going to double sessions. In other business, the Board studied preliminary drawings presented by Raymond Gardner to cover an indoor court at Cedar High. It would create a much improved electronics lab and a new special education area. By putting up walls under the existing roof, a possible fire hazard will be eliminated. In other business Graduation dates were set for three classes. The adult high school's graduation was set for May 26, with Cedar High School's on May 27. Parowan High School graduation will be on May 28. The Board also accepted a bid of $53,584 each for two buses which have a life expectancy of 15 years. Robert Stratton discussed the status of three special education students who will turn 21 years of age during this school year. Utah state law dictates that schooling must be provided until then, and it is hoped that a sheltered workshop will be available in the fall. |
