This was Edith Gudmundsen, Hill AFB librarian for the past 21 years. Asked if she doesn't get tired reading so many books and book reviews, she replied: "Never. If alone I read during meals; and always an hour or so before I go to sleep. More, of course, when I hava the time, but always at least one book a week, besides all the reviews and publishers' material that come across a librarian's desk." Mrs. Gudmundsen began her professional career as a teacher in Ogden after obtaining her degree at Weber College while still in her teens. She taught for 10 years, and married; then she transferred into the library field which had always attracted her. She had taken summer courses at California and Oregon universities in library science while still a teacher, so she was prepared for the new work at the Ogden library in 1937. At the start of World War II she took a Civil Service examination that qualified her for the position of librarian and recreation director at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salt Lake City. She kept the position until 1945, then took leave to he with her family which was to include two daughters, Linda and Jan. Hill AFB needed ai librarian in 1948, and as Mrs. Gudmundsen fit the need perfectly, she began her Air Force librarian career that was to continue in four temporary at the dedication of buildings and culminate in the fifth the 'beautiful Gerrity Memorial Library on May 29, 1968. "The base library had been closed for two years after World War II. I had no idea of the tremendous responsibility involved in the position of service librarian," she related. "The knowledge and research required was tremendous, for one thing the funding technicalities the processes for getting and spending library funds. But other base organizations gave me every assistance, and when a year had passed, I knew the operation." "An exciting thing about this job is the technical research that goes on. It is necessary to procure books for personnel working on mission subjects. We have built up different areas such as the business administration library and several hundred volumes on chemical research."
