THINK SAFETY Hill's Total 2011 DUIs: 23 COMMENTARY National Hispanic Heritage Month honors latest Hispanic Medal of Honor recipient ion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base LewisMcChord, Wash. When he deployed to Afghanistan, 2nd Lt. Malone he participated in a rare daylight raid to capture a high-value target. It was this mission that would earn him the Medal of Honor. Almost immediately after arriving to the target site via helicopters, the 70 Rangers came under strong fire from approximately 12 armed enemies. Soon thereafter, Petry and Private 1st Class Lucas Robinson took the responsibility of clearing a courtyard where three enemy fighters were located. As they were clearing this courtyard, one enemy fired on them and wounded both of them: Petry had a round go through both of his legs and Robinson's side plate was hit. Petry then led Robinson to a chicken coop within the BY 2ND LT. PAUL M. MALONE OO-ALC/GHMWP Aerospace Engineer Secondary Power Systems E arlier this year, July 12, Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Arthur Petry was presented the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama. On that day, he became the second living recipient of the award since the Vietnam War, the ninth recipient for actions in Afghanistan or Iraq, and the forty-fourth recipient of Hispanic heritage. Petry was born on July 29, 1979, in Santa Fe, N.M., to Larry and Lorella Tapia Petry. He and his wife, Ashley, raised four children: three from Ashley's previous marriage (Brittany, Austin and Reagan), and their son, Landon. After high school, Petry was influenced by a cousin who had joined the U.S. Army Rangers and likewise enlisted in the Army in September 1999. He was training to become a Ranger on the morning of the September 11th attacks. Later, Petry was assigned to Company D, 2nd Battal- of active duty, I wanted to come home to Utah and go to school. Is there one decision you made in your life that you would never change? I don't think there's one specific thing. People also were "arrested" by a fund-raiser sheriff after groups donated to the sheriff for the person's arrest, and were bailed out by donations from others. Although seriously injuring himself, his actions saved Higgins and Robinson from almost certain death. It is individuals like Sgt. 1st Class Petry who went above and beyond the call of duty that makes our nation so great. During Hispanic Heritage Month, I encourage you to take the time to remember the numerous contributions of the Hispanic/Latino population and celebrate the diversity of peoples and cultures that created the United States of America.
