Craig McCuin, the deputy program manager for the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program. "Perpetrators of sexual assault rely on bystander inaction in the hopes they can commit this crime and not get caught." The idea is one of bystander intervention, McCuin said. "Bystander intervention is an all-out effort to get people to engage in preventing sexual assault," the colonel said. Not only will bystander intervention prevent the physical and psychological injuries that occur when an assault 7 J .. That's where "Hurts one. Affects All." comes in. "Sexual assault happens directly to an individual, but can indirectly affect everyone in a unit, as well as the victim's family and friends," McCuin said. Sexual assaults diminish the Air Force's ability to function proficiently at all levels. "The mention of mission readiness, together with the toll sexual assault takes on the victim, is not meant to be callous," the colonel said. "It's just that we all need to understand the far-reaching impact a sexual assault can have on the victim and everyone else around them." Some of the mission-related damages sexual assault incurs can include a loss of trust in Building 891. Traffic using Arsenal will use the new road to connect to Wardleigh instead of connecting to "M" Street. This closure allows for the movement of fill dirt now east of Wardleigh Road to the west using conveyors. The conveyors are more efficient than trucks and don't create traffic congestion or damage to the roads. There is also the possibility that the victim and subjects may be temporarily, or permanently, unable to fulfill their obligation to the military due to physical condition, mental state or incarceration. "Regardless of the extent of the assault or the situation in which it happened, both the victim and the Air Force will be greatly impacted," McCuin said. But, if every Airman acted to stop sexual assault, we could nearly eliminate every case of it. "The 'Real Wingmen Act' slogan means that Wingmen always act, on or off duty, in the certain knowledge that all persons possess fundamental worth as human beings," McCuin said. "The key is to change perceptions and help Airmen understand that their actions on behalf of another any of us enjoy an alcoholic drink as part of the celebration of life and good times, for instance birthdays, promotions and the end of a hard week of work. Each and every time we partake in an alcoholic beverage we must remember to be responsible to ourselves, our friends and family, co-workers and just about anyone who crosses our path during this time. We have observed and heard of horrible consequences due to careless drinking — arrests for Driving under the Influence, accidents that kill and maim, careers ended, tremendous financial burden as well as the heartache and stress from all of the listed events. You must be smart and use sound judgment every time you have even one drink. Here is a true story, a gift shared by a member of the Hill Air Force Base Team: "We talk a lot about Wingmen and what it means to be one. But we don't talk much about how using that Wingman concept takes responsibility and courage, which every Airman should have. "My husband was one of those who wouldn't admit that he needed a 'Wingman.' There was no way he would EVER let anyone else drive. In the eight years we were married, he had seven DUIs that cost a lot of money between bail, court and lawyer fees. He got his check every Friday and cashed it at the bar. He bought rounds for the house all night long. He would pay for drinks and not notice that the rest of his money would fall on the floor and disappear. We had no credit, because we had no money most of the time. I didn't make enough to pay our bills, so it was scary. We ended up divorced. "Three months later, my 36-year-old ex-husband was speeding and ran his Dodge Ram Charger into a concrete bar ditch. Needless to say, he had been drinking. It was a closed-casket funeral that was held in his small Texas hometown. Over 200 people attended. His parents were shattered, and his brothers and their families were sad and depressed for a long time. I felt responsible, like if I had just been there he wouldn't have died. It took several years and a lot of soul-searching to realize the only difference if had I been there would have been a DOUBLE closed-casket funeral." Responsible drinking is not an option — it is a requirement. The first step is to always have a plan in place prior to having a drink and NEVER deviate from the plan. You want to are not meddling, but instead are helping to keep a fellow Airman safe."
