W. F. Lynch charted, sounded and collected scientific data in the Dead sea and the River Jordon. Lynch took two metallic boats on the United States store-shi- p Supply, landed at Acre in the Mediterranean and transported the boats on camel driven trucks to the Sea of Galilee. This expedition spent from April to July in its investigations and established the fact that the Dead sea was 1300 feet below sea level, thus settling an old and much discussed problem. History does not definitely record the origin of the naval uni-- 1 forms, but as early as 1603 King James of England ordered his principal masters of ships to be always bravely attired in liveries of scarlet cloth embellished with velvet, silk lace, buttons and gold embroidery. In 1748 an order required all of his majesty's officers from the admirals down to the midshipmen to wear a uniformity of clothing. The first American naval uniform of which any record has been found was provided by a resolution of the Massachusetts council in green and white uniforms. The marine congress in September 1776 issued what was the first official uniform regulation for the navy. This provided that officers should wear blue coats with red lapels with a standing collar and flat yellow buttons, blue breeches, and a red waistcoat. The navy's only vessel that acts as a tender for lighter than air ships, such as the Macon, is due to be at Puget sound in the near future. This vessel, the tanker Patoka, has a large mooring mast near the stern. The naval academy recently gave the degree bachelor of science to graduates in good standing who were not commissioned. On four occasions during the history of this nation, the secretary of the navy has performed ad ditional tempory duty as secretary of war. In 1900 our first secretary of the navy, Benjamin Stoddert, served as secretary of war upon the resignation of Secretary James McHenry. In June 1845 Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft acted as secretary of war. In October 1850 Secretary of the Navy William A. Graham temporily took the place of the secretary of war. In August 1853, President Franklin Pierce appointed Secretary of the Navy James C. Dobbin to serve as acting secretary of war during the temporary absence of Secretary Davis from the capital. With the aid of the Submarine Lung, a man can ascend from a depth of 100 feet, in one minute. Every submarine in the navy carries two submarine lungs for each man plus ten percent for spares. In his testa with the submarine lung, Lieutenant Mommsen.United States Navy, ascended from a depth of over 200 feet. Sea pressure is 44 hundreths of a pound per square inch for each foot of depth; therefore at 100 feet the pressure is 44 pounds. The navy has 21 naval hospitals in the "United States and beyond the seas which are maintained for the welfare of the personnel of the United States navy. Cocoanut, med. shred, lb. pkg...
