Show mT Gunnison Speaking of Sports Management by Litigation by Bob Bahlmann Staff writer A couple of weeks ago we talked about a lawsuit by the Club that has resulted in additional restrictions on OHV use Last week on KMTI Radio's Table Talk program I listened to a representative of livestock interests in Sanpete County discuss similar tactics being employed by SUWA (the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance) to restrict grazing on public lands I'm beginning to see a disturbing trend It seems that special interest groups have discovered that by tying up government agencies with litigation or the threat of litigation they can restrict traditional uses of public lands by dragging out Ithe process of management decision making until it becomes a moot point There doesn't seem to be any shortage of funds to pay the attorneys that represent these special interest groups On the other hand those who's livelihoods depend on the continued use of public lands are scrapping by in an economy that is driving more and more farmers and ranchers out of business I wonder where the city slickers Sierra think they're going to get the cream for their five dollar a cup espresso or the beef for their Big Macs when they've made farming and ranching impractical Here in Sanpete County we can see this process in action There is some hope that under the current administration we may see a reversal of the administration's Clinton roadless ruling Unfortunately the process may take so long that Satterwhite may be forced out of business before it can happen In our prison systems we have seen a move to reduce the number of frivolous lawsuits Perhaps it's time to try the same thing with environmental issues Perhaps those that make the decisions need to get some back bone and throw out actions that inhibit the processes that are already in place and take too long even without additional delays We need to let those that have been hired for their training and experience make decisions on a local level There are already enough checks and balances to protect the resources and provide for the multiple use of bur resources that has been the intent of those that established public lands ever since the time of Theodore Roosevelt Hinckley President the Church Christ Jesus by Bob Bahlmann Sanpete County author Shirley Anderson Bahlmann has made her professional writing debut with the This holiday season will be different from the past There is more of a feeling of community and country As we get into the full swing of things this season we still need to remember a few things If you are going to a party make sure you have a designated driver or make other arrangements to get back home We need to remember not to drink and drive The Utah Highway Patrol and other police agencies will be working overtime shifts concentrating on impaired drivers So if you don't want to spoil your holiday season don't drink and drive Also please be more patient with each other As we drive in the traffic and storms we REALLY need to slow down It was amazing two weeks ago while I was working up Clear Creek Canyon It was snowing hard and the roads were slick and snowpacked As I went from crash to crash people miles would drive by at per hour on roads and wonder why they would crash I don't remember how many near misses we had but my sergeant and I were pretty lucky to get out with our cars in one piece So when the weather gets bad please slow down It's better to get there late than not get there at all Every year I have to remind you that we kill over 41000 people in the United States in car crashes Don't be a number — be smart and slow down Finally I would like to tell all of you out there that help and support the Utah Highway Patrol thanks for all your help Our jobs are a lot easier with the help and support we get from the community We would especially like to thank the hospital staff the EMTs and fire department personnel around the counties for their help and support Thank you to the other police agencies that back us up and assist us in our duties Thank you to the media for their support and help in getting our messages out I hope that this hojiday season is a very happy one for you We will be out in force to make sure you feel safe in your homes and on the road Please take the time to remem- ber the men and women who won't be home with their families who instead will be in other countries making sure you and I will be safe and free Freedom has become a very special commodity not to be taken for granted Happy holidays to all San Juan was in the
