Children’s Workshop The Children’s Patriotic Workshop at the City Library Thursday June 24th was very A large group of successful children participated and enjoyed making hats and flags Jin Mark Christiansen poses with Suzuki and some of the trophies he has won A Real Winner! Mark Christiansen son of Harold and Ruth Christiansen of Mayfield has become quite a Race enthusiast and participant He has been riding and maintaining motorbikes since he was 11 years old and has raced them in competition since 1971 Mark has a Suzuki 125 and the competition is challenging enough As you would expect in such sport it does have its hazards Mark has broken one hand carries a scar on top of his head and has torn the seat out of his pants along with a couple of handfuls of flesh The latter incident did not take place in the line of duty but by doing a wheelie in fourth gear and then while slowing down for an intersection loosing his balance hitting the throttle and scooting down an asphalt road on his pants Mark says he doesn’t do that anymore Mark will probably begin racing in the expert class rather than the amateur class because of pressure being put on him from others because he would not mind picking up a little money and because he is good enough to be an expert Mark won the first place trophy at the Cedar City Race held June 27th There were entries from California Nevada Arizona Colorado and Utah Mark has won 13 trophies in racing competition and of the 13 nine of them are 1st place trophies Dr G Stanford Rees honored for 44 years of service A special feature of the Fourth of July holiday community dinner July 3rd at the Gunnison City Park will be the honoring of Dr G Stanford Rees for his 44 years of medical of service to the people Gunnison Valley The dinner is being sponsored by the Gunnison Valley Lions Club and the Gunnison Valley Jaycees “Doc” as he is affectionately known was born in Scipio Utah 70 years ago After graduating from Juab High School in Nephi and the University of Utah he received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the of Pennsylvania University After he finished his training in Oakland California Dr Rees and his wife Francis Ford Rees Utah moved to Dragerton where he practiced medicine for to a year before moving Gunnison in 1932 Dr and Mrs Rees purchased the building in which he now practices and remodeled it into a combination home and hospital Later after he had accomplished his goal of establishing a he found it hospital here poslble to build a home for his family Then as a community gesture he turned the hospital over to the people of Gunnison Valley for the sum of $100 Dr Rees enlisted in the Army in 1942 and became a transport physician serving in the South Pacific Theatre of World War II He attained the rank of Major in the United States Army Always active in civic and political affairs as well as his Dr professional associations Rees has held many responsible nuand received positions merous awards for his work and services some of which are: In 1965 he received the AH Robins Award for outstanding community services the University of Utah Alumni Association presented its Merit Honor Award to him in 1975 He was elected a Charter Fellow by the American Academy of Family Practice for his participation in special educational programs and the Distinguished Service Award for the Utah State Medical Association for outstanding service and leadership in that organization Except for two years he has represented his senatorial district in the Utah State Senate since 1963 While serving in the Senate he was Instrumental in passage of a Paramedics Act a Nurses Act and Act Organ Transplant with medical experimentation dogs It r there has been one underlying philosophy in his years of service it is the belief that we should respect the dignity of each person An avid sportsman Dr Rees has often remarked how much he has enjoyed living in this area because of its proximity to fine fishing and hunting facilities In his little white jeep which his children say is his pride and joy he has probably found more choice fishing holes than anyone In the area He also loves the spectator sports and has always followed the local high school teams with a great deal of enthusiasm as well as being their “doctor” For many years he has given immunization shots to the students of the Gunnison Valley High School and has turned the money received back to the school to be used for special projects This was later put into a scholarship fund entitled "The Francis Ford Rees Nursing in memory of Scholarship” Mrs Rees who passed away in May 1968 It is interesting to note that Dr Rees has delivered well over 2000 babies which is more than the population of Gunnison Dr Rees' sons and daughters Include Mrs Eugene (Nancy) of Centerfield Jensen Mrs Madsen of Gary (Natasha) Manti Dr Riley Rees of Lake Louisiana and Mrs Charles Kelly (Vicky) Smith of Salt Lake City His wife whom he married in the fall of 1969 Is the former Bee Jensen of Manti Another “family” member is LaNiece Petersen Stott of Manti who has been closely associated with him in his work for many years Dr Rees’ daughter Nancy Jensen wrote the following about her “doctor” father: “To everyone he’s else “Doc' but to his daughters and son he’s always been "Daddy" or “Dad” I as the eldest remember making vaguely "calls” with him when was just a youngster Tasha recalls taking all of his money when she was much younger and scattering it up and down the streets never to be found again I’m sure will always Vicky remember his love and patience with her through the years will Riley always save the letter Daddy wrote to him the day he received his medical degree from the University of Utah The words in the letter are typical of the feelings that Daddy has always had towards everyone everyone is equal in worth to everyone else and deserves all the consideration and concern necessary to get them back on their feet However Daddy has a special charisma to everyone he makes everyone feel that they are extra special to him We as the ladies in his life Bee Nancy Tasha Vicky and LaNiece have always felt like '"queens” to him Whenever we were dressed up to go any place he’d give us a hug and say we were the gals there were what a boost to deflated egos One lady was sent to the office by a relative and she didn’t know anything about “Dr Rees” When Daddy saw her he growled and said "Well what’s the matter with you” The rest of us who know him don't think a thing about those growls that come out but when this lady got back to her relative she wanted to know why she’d ever sent her to see that grumpy Dr Rees Still another patient told me “Dr Rees knows just how to handle me when I need getting after and when I need sym- - pathy” To all of us Reeses Daddy is the greatest most special guy in the world and we feel privileged to be related to him no one has a Incidentally keener sense of humcr a zest for living and more optimism than Daddy If life hands him a blow he jumps right up is a good day and oday tomorrow will be better" The following tribute was written a few years ago to Dr Rees by Fern Malmgren OUR If OWN DR REES follow Main Street and up the road a piece You're sure to find our Dr Rees He came to our valley about you 1932 When times were hard and pickins were few But he found him a house he and Ford could lease This began the career of our own Doc Rees With Ford by his side as his favorite nurse They settled right down for better or worse With their little daughter Nancy and then Tasha came And the whole doggone valley joined in the game Doc brought the babies and mended our ills Gave us prescriptions and we took the pills The calls to the homes seemed to increase And with satchel in hand came our own Doctor Rees One day a unique building he happened to find So he built him an office with a hospital in mind A friend and a counselor is this great man Whom we all owe so much gratitude for our hospital plan A call from the Service was the next thing we knew cont on page 6 Dr G Stanford Rees |
