Show Sports Page 6 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Soccor, Volleyball and Golf highlights by MITCH PETERSON Don’t read too much into the results of last week’s Gunnison Lady Bulldog’s soccer matches. The Bulldogs faced two of the top teams in the region in Millard and Grand and the results were similar, with Millard winning 14-0 and Grand winning 10-0. Both the Eagles and Red Devils are deep teams with a lot of experience. Millard has outscored their last three opponents by a combined score of 36-0, and they’ve earned the #1 2A ranking in at least two statewide polls. Both programs have competed in the 3A league in the past, joining the 2A ranks last year. The Bulldogs played Millard well for much of the first half. Gunnison goalkeeper Megan Jensen made seven saves, including a huge stop on a Millard penalty kick in the 35th minute. The Bulldog defense held the powerful Eagles offense scoreless the first 11 minutes, and Millard was up just 3-0 after 37 minutes. A late second-half Millard scoring binge made the final score seem more lop-sided than it was. Against Grand, the Red Devils scored four of their seven goals in extra time- one in the first half and three in the second half. The Bulldogs forced some action early, and Fekirte Deskins nearly scored in the 7th minute when she put a shot on goal, but the Grand goalie made the stop. After the Red Devils scored in the 10th minute, Fekirte got another shot in the 14th, and this time her shot beat Grand’s goalie, but hit the post and spun out of bounds. Fekirte would add another shot in the 34th minute. Jensen had another solid outing in net making five stops in the first half, featuring an arm save on a hard free kick from about 19 yards out in the 31st minute. The Red Devils slowly built a 4-0 lead after 34 minutes, and went up 5-0 in first-half extra time. Referees add time to the end of a half based on the number of substitutions and injury time outs, so no one is sure exactly when the half will end. After the Red Devils score two more goals early in the second half to go up 7-0, the Bulldog defense held them in check the last 20 minutes of regulation. Due to some injury stoppage time during the second half, the referees added at least 10 minutes of extra time at the end of the match, and the Red Devils scored three goals in that time to win it 10-0. Sarah Spurgeon played goal for the last 10 minutes of the Grand match, while start- TALKIN’ SMACK with Frandsen & Leatherwood Picks of the Week Record W:2 L:1 Game #1 BYU @ UCLA Leatherwood: BYU 20 - UCLA 28 Ben Olson will win the grudge match despite BYU’s efforts. Leatherwood: As for last week, most would say 2/3 really isn’t that bad, unless you’re Kelly Frandsen in which case his 3/3 was a little better. All I can say is. . . Look for the rolls to reverse this week. Utah is in the win column and the Cougs go 1-1. Lotsa Motsa Sports Calendar Mitch Peterson/Gunnison Valley Gazette Gunnison playmaker Meseret Deskins battles a Millard defender for possession in last week’s soccer match at Bulldog field. ing goalie Megan Jensen moved onto the field in an effort to create some offense. Mariele Gomez was solid on the back line for Gunnison. The Deskins sisters, Meseret and Fekirte, along with Karen Orozco, worked hard up front but faced some tough Millard and Grand defenders last week. Still, they came close to scoring on several occasions. “We’re getting some good individual efforts, but we need to come together as a team,” said Bulldogs head coach Jaron Jensen. Heather Matthews is a central midfielder for the Bulldogs, a big responsibility for a freshman. “She’s really coachable, and she loves the game,” Jensen said. Matthews is soft spoken, but don’t let that fool you- she likes to mix it up on the field. “I like getting into it,” she said. This week, the Bulldogs travel to Salina to tangle with the North Sevier Lady Wolves on Tuesday, then host the Richfield Lady Wildcats on Thursday, August 6th. The Lady Bulldogs volleyball team travelled to Parowan last Thursday, August 30th, and ran into a hard-hitting lady Rams team. It was another “mixed night” according to Bulldogs head coach Jody Allred. “Parowan had some big hitters,” Allred said. The Rams won the match 3-0. The Bulldog junior varsity won their match over the Rams after falling behind two games to none. Serving was the differ- of the ence- the Bulldogs JV missed just one serve in each of the last three games to win the match 32. Allred compares his team to Sylvester Stallone’s “Rocky” character. “We get hit a lot, but we keep fighting back,” Allred said. “We need to develop a knockout punch”. The Bulldogs host Kanab in their final pre-season match Tuesday, August 4th. On Thursday, August 6th, the Bulldogs open the Region 12 season at home against the North Sevier Wolves. The Bulldog’s golf team finished in fifth place at last week’s region match at the Cove View course in Richfield. Max Sanders again led the way, firing a 79. Colton Lund had an 84 for the Bulldogs. Jeremy Reid, Jake Hansen, Drayson Ball, and Jarom Christensen also played at Richfield. A senior, Sanders says driving is the best part of his game. He’s consistently lowered his average region score this season, and his 79 at Cove View was his low of the year, even though he says that not much of his game was working right that day. “I played better last year,” Sanders said. He was the team medalist as a junior. This week’s region match is in Price at the Carbon Country Club. The Lady Bulldog tennis team start their season Tuesday, September 4th, with a home region match against Manti, and we’ll have the results in next week’s edition.
