Show Thursday, January 18, 2007 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 5 A cold night for a burn The annual Christmas tree burn was held Monday evening in the vacant lot just east of Dr. Jackson’s home. Each year, for many years now, Kim Pickett and his family have held a Christmas tree burn on the second or third Monday in January. Many local families come out to enjoy the evening together. Preparation for the burn begins shortly after Christmas as Kim uses his father, Standly’s pick up truck to go around town collecting discarded Christmas trees. The trees are then piled up on the vacant lot and continue to dry for a couple of more weeks. On the night of the burn, two fires are started, one, a small fire for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, and the other a large fire where tree after tree is thrown on to create a large roaring fire. A table is set up with lanterns for light and a pot luck dinner is set out. This year the food included hot chocolate, hot dogs, chips, soda, soup and homemade cookies. Much food is eaten and many stories are told as families crowd around the fires trying to stay warm. This year’s burn was one of the coldest anybody could remember. According to local weatherman and boy scout, Luke Jensen, the temperature was at 5 degrees and dropping at the time of the burn. Despite the bitter cold weather, the burn was another success and very enjoyable for those who attended. REPORT FROM THE LEGISLATURE by Representative K. L. McIff Mark Henline/GVG This is the first of a series of reports which I intend to provide the citizens of Sanpete, Sevier and Emery Counties which comprise Legislative District 70. While the legislature officially convenes for the annual session on January 15, much has already been accomplished since the November election. In mid-November, the two political parties selected their leadership teams. The Republicans selected Greg Curtis of Salt Lake City as Speaker of the House. The Majority Leader is David Clark, a banker from St. George. The Majority Whip is Gordon Snow, a general contractor and real estate broker from Roosevelt, with the Assistant Whip being Brad Dee, a human resource director from Ogden. The Democratic team consists of Ralph Becker, a consultant and planner from Salt Lake City, Brad King, an educator from Price, and Carol Speckman Moss, a retired educator from Salt Lake City. These are solid people and provide a good geographic balance. I am pleased that rural Utah has a reasonable level of representation in Legislative leadership. In mid-December the Governor released his budget. It advances major increases in funding for public education while proposing a $1 million tax cut. The House Republican Caucus subsequently met and also advanced a major increase for public education funding - $300 million, but tied this to a $300 million tax cut. I personally favor each standing on its own merit. An investment in education is an investment in the future. The tax cut will require greater scrutinization. It is too early in the process to pick an arbitrary number or to determine exactly where that ought to come down. My committee assignments include Higher Education Appropriations, Judiciary and Public Utilities and Technology. My commitment is to serve the needs of our State and her people as efficiently as possible. I welcome your input. My e-mail address at the legislature is kaymciff@utah. gov. Did Santa go overboard??
