KBYU is pleased to involve your school in a literacy program provided by our station. We have had a positive relationship with Gunnison Elementary for the last two years. This year you can receive a free book just for signing up for our workshops, as well as one or more free books each month. Ready To Learn is a program that has served Utah for over eleven years. The four goals of the program are; 1. Children are read to twenty minutes a day. 2. Parents/educators and caregivers use emergent literacy skills with children. 3. When parents choose to watch television, the best way for shows to be a tool for education is through the implementation of our learning triangle. 4. Basic child development practices are enhanced in the homes. We offer no-cost workshops throughout the year that focus on these goals. Participants that come lo the workshop learn and practice skills that they will pass on to their children. Studies indicate that the first and best teacher for a child is the parent. These workshops are for parents, not children. An evaluation found that Ready To Learn workshops had a lasting, positive impact on the behavior of parents and children Families read books together 35% more often. Families read books for 20% longer periods - about 46 minutes more each week. • Children watched 40% less TV. • Children watched 25% more educational programs that prepared them for school, Parents discussed TV programs with children 50% more often, Families made more frequent trips to the library and bookstore. If you are interested in coming to a workshop you can sign up through your literacy specialist, Robyn Hendrickson robvn. hendrickson(5)ssanpete,k12.ut.usor call Gunnison Elementary School at 528-7880, or call Stephanie Anderson, at 801-422-8488 or email her at Stephanie,Anderson(5)bvu.edu Your school meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Gunnison Elementary. Look for this notice to come home with one of your children next week. Return the sign up sheet to receive your free children's book, and an email reminder for each monthly workshop. Thursday afternoon, Ms. Mecharn's Desktop Publishing class took an interesting trip to the home of Mark and Jodi Henline. The class is learning how to make the school newsletter and newspaper and the Henline's offered to teach us how, since they are the masterminds behind your hometown news. Mr. and Mrs. Henline started out telling us how you should pick your name for your paper, crop pictures and how they choose all of their intriguing news articles for the week in the Gazette. One of the most interesting parts of it was when Mark showed us how they actually print the newspaper in Richfield. He said that the printing press is enormous and it prints a page every second. They print a copy of that week's paper onto negative sheets and onto a sheet of metal. Sometimes they won't get done typing and printing out the paper until late hours of The PTA will be set up near the door of the little gym with refreshments. That evening you will be asked to vote for the district recreation tax to help support a new soccer program and all other athletic activities throughout the year.. We will also ask you to vote for (1) new community member to be on our School Community Council and serve for the next two years. The council will replace three members; Diane Dyreng, Todd Petersen, and Mark Anderson with Jolene Camp, Rhett Jackson and a new elected member to fill our council membership. ' Gunnison Weather Other members of the council are; Keith James (President), Wendy Reynolds (PTA), Linda Miller (Counselor), Kirk Ander- son (Principal), Debra Madsen, and Frank Pike (Community Members). This important council represents our school and helps advise the school in its duties in spending Trust Lands money, formulating school rules, accreditation, activities and other important decisions we make at our school. We meet every two months at 2:10 in the afternoon. You may nominate yourself or someone else you feel would serve our school. the night like 2 or 2:30 am! A couple of our class's favorite parts of the newspaper are the Valley Views and the Heap of the Week. It's always fun to look on the back of the newspaper and see some of the random and spontaneous pictures that Mark takes from the activities that week. You would never imagine that Mark and Jodi have a list of high school kids that want to be next week's Heap of the Week. It's quite long! You never realize how much effort and time something takes, until you actually talk to the person that does it, see it done, or do it yourself. It's good to know that someone in our community has a love for journalism that is willing to take the time to put out a newspaper to keep you up to date on the happenings around you. Thank you Mark and Jodi! We appreciate it!! The Scouting Hews! GVHS News GVHS will be holding Parent-Teacher-Conferences on Tuesday, September 26th in the little gym, from 3 to 6 pm.
