Show JUSTICE BREWER STRICKEN. Aged Member of the Supreme Court Dies From Attack of Apoplexy. Washington. David Josiah Brewer, associate justice of the supreme court of the United States, died Monday night at 10:30 o'clock from a stroke of apoplexy. His death occurred before he could be carried to his bed. Mrs. Brewer was with him when the end came. The end was altogether unexpected. David Josiah Brewer, associate justice jus-tice of the United States supreme court, was born in Smyrna, Asia Minor,' Mi-nor,' June 20, 1837. He is the son of Rev. Josiah Brewer and Emilia A. DAVID J. BREWER. Associate Justice U. S. Supreme Court Field, sister of David Dudley, Cyrus W., and Justice Stephen J. Field; his father was an early missionary to Turkey; was graduated from Yale college col-lege in 1S56 and from the Albany law school in 1S5S; established himself in his profession at Leavenworth, Kan., in 1S59, where he resided until he removed re-moved to Washington to enter upon his duties; in 1S61 was appointed United States commisioner; during IS60 and 1SG4 judge of Ihe probate and criminal courts of Leavenwo:th county; from January, 1SG5, to January, Janu-ary, 1SG9, was judge of the dlslrict court; in 1SG9 and 1ST0 was county attorney of Leavenworth; in ISiU was sleeted a justice of the supreme court of his stale, and re-elected jn 1S76 and 1SS2; in 1SS4 was appointed ap-pointed judge of the circuit court of the United States for the eighth district; was appointed to the position h held at time of his dea:'.i to succeed Justice Stanley Matthews, Jeceased, in December, 1SS9. |
