Show "SAUNA WOULD GET THE REVENUE AND GUNNISON THE NUISANCE." Is Pleaded In Justification For a Wet City Here at Present. With Bartholomew absent and Larson Lar-son not qualifying the city council meeting Tuesday night was in the hands of the three councillors Mad-sen, Mad-sen, Peterson and Childs and the mayor. In course of the proceedings the liquor license question came up and was handled in a way that indicated the purposing of a tight corner being drawn for the saloon not now, but later ou. It was upon the question of granting a lioense to Antboay .Mad-seu .Mad-seu that brougtit on the discussion. Referring to the fact that so many of the cities in this county and other parts of the state were iu line either for high license or prohibition the mayor iieid: ''Gunnison city cannot affoad to be alone, and yet we need the liceusa revenue." He further remarked, re-marked, "With the saloons at Salina open, it would be foolish for Gunnison Gunni-son to close, fpalina in that oase would get the revenue, and Gunnison the nuisance." Childs spoke in favor of getting in line, but it should not be doue at once as the ealoons are in fairness entitled to some lime in which to prepare -for any radical change. Madspa and Peterson each held a similar view ; but council, to a man, conceded the need for more restricted regulation and which they felt would uudoubledly be effected before a great while. The applicant for liceiloO,. Autketay Madsen, was gien to understand that his request to commence business October tenth would be granted in regnlar course. L. Ludvigson was granted a renewal renew-al of his liquor license for another quarter. Proceedings commeuoed with a statement from 1'ayor Melcalf that a lot of unfinished business of the former form-er town board had been ieft standing aud it was open to question as to the right of council acting on the same, The matter was deferred, pauding advice ad-vice from city r.iiorcey. Minutes of last meeting disposed of, a report was then accepted from Mad-sen, Mad-sen, whoiu compsuy with the mayor had conferred with Attorney Johnson, as instructed, on matters for shaping a legal line of procedure as a city council. Recorder Childs was instructed instruc-ted to inform the city attorney to draw a new set of ordinances soon as may be, A committee was appointed on ordinances or-dinances and another to see after the repair of bridges. The bond of Mayor Metcalf was approved ap-proved by the council. An instrument was presented for signatures of council, from Sanpete county, grantiug the city the right to construct, maintain, and operate a pipe, line system, and to use the highways, high-ways, roads and other public thoroughfares thor-oughfares for such purpose. A communication was read from Engineer Lyman asking to be informed inform-ed of the estimated capacity wanted in constructing the proposed water system. Kecorder was instructed to make reply, that a water supply adequate ade-quate for a population of five thousand thous-and should be provided. It was voted on motion ef Madsen to have the city attorney draw a suitable suita-ble petition for signatures necessary in forming a citizens' tioket for the coming city election. The session throughout was marked mark-ed with a desire of furthering the city's interest. The customary yeild-iug yeild-iug to methods of procedure not in conformity to ordinance was attempted attemp-ted and would have succeeded but for the firmuess of Councillor Childs, who held out for proper respect being paid to the citv council in the matter of applications for liquor license. |
