Show The eastern press has been filled of late with eomment, mostly acrimonious, regarding the al leged relationship between Senator George Sutherland Suth-erland and the notorious John D. Lee, leader in the Mountain Meadows massacre. The tone of the press generally is that the election of Mr. Suther- I land was a vindication of Lee and an endorse mont of the atrocltes lie committed. The story was, of course, a disreputable libel, I sent out by some unscrupulous local hack writer. Mr. Sutherland has paid little attention to the mat- ter, further than to emphatically deny the story, I but his friends here have been diligent in an effort B to discover who was the author of the petard. I Their labors have been rewarded to the extent that I they have practically learned that the man who I wrote it is employed on an unprincipled sheet I which for months has conducted a scurrilous cam-M cam-M paign against the newly elected senator. |
