Show i Tothical Vietv Toint. 1 It has been frequently Intimated in these col- I i tlmns that Kearns Would probably not retain , 1 Odell as a guest in his chariot in the race for I If the mayoralty nomination, and this now seems I 1 practically assured from the fact that the senior I senator, always sagacious and omnipresent, is I ' now training another candidate to grasp the l I l - mayoralty wand when it is laid down by faithful m 1 1 ' old Ez. The new entry is none other than the m I i distinglushed mining operator, Mr. Henry Newell. M ff I j That complicates matters very gravely and B lit lias aeady caused ominous trepldition in the B camp of the Heavenly Twins. Neither Callister B i j nor Anderson, one and inseparable, had reckoned m If ! on this new development in the municipal battle, M IH and their heads are now leaning together in bel-M bel-M f " ligerent conclave. The circumstance that super- M ', I induces a notable uneasiness with the Twins is B ! the complicated state of affairs in the other pre- B I ' cincts, which makes it look probable that Newell !B ! from the Fourth would be a very athletic rival H I j for anyone from the other precincts who hap- I pened to shriek for the nomination in the mayor- I alty welkin. - i ti tt ij tj 1 For instance, in the First precinct there will be two aspirants for city offices. It is considered indispensible that Mr. George L. Nye will be a I candidate for renomination as city attorney, and 1 Mr. Joseph McKnlght of the same precinct will I be a formidable entry for the treasurership nom- inatlon. The friends of McKnight believe that j his chances of passing Nye in the race are ex- 1 tremely good, and in this connection refer to i I Nye's waning popularity and the extremely ludi- 1 crous position he has assumed in his tentative t f prosecution of Fernstrom and Cottrell. The popu- I lar belief among the workers of that precinct t appears to be that the city attorney will be shut out at the post and that McKnight will receive the solid precinct support. A similar state of I affairs prevails in the Fifth precinct, from which j place A. L. Simondi will evolve as a candidate for city recorder. It must be palpable, however, ? to Simondi that if Odell is nominated for mayor H m he will bo badly crippled in his sprint for the recordership. A light of this nature is also on in the Third precinct, where Kessler, son-in-law of President Joseph F. Smith, and Frank Matthews, Mat-thews, an acknowledged devotee at the Kearns camp fires, will try conclusions for the recorder-Ship, recorder-Ship, and Openshaw will attempt to secure the solid precinct endorsement for the post of city treasurer. The Second will also loom up with a .cartload of candidates, and this leaves the Fourth precinct in first-class fettle for capturing almost anything they want. The question agitating politicians poli-ticians at present is whether they will decide upon Henry Newell for mayor, or will launch a strong candidate for the city attorneyship. It is considered con-sidered probable that they will go after the position po-sition of city attorney, as" it is generally believed that Nye will be an easy man to vanquish in the next convention. It is not considered at all probable prob-able that the Fourth will support either of the two candidates mentioned from that precinct, Frank Swenson for treasurer, or Seldon I. Claw-son Claw-son for recorder, as they are in a position to capture a more important office with a stronger man. W to W All this unsettled state of affairs is viewed with great urbanity by the Heavenly Twins (Callister (Cal-lister and Anderson), who find in the general upheaval some consolation for the fight they have on in their own precinct. Further, none of the candidates mentioned are at all agreeable to the Twin faction. They are also indulging in mutual felicitations over the vindication by the grand jury of Mr. Joseph Silver, who was before that august body on a charge of polygamy. From this it may be Implied that "Silver" will be ? battle cry of the Twins in the coming campaign. Now that it appears certain that they will have a fight for supremacy in their own precinct, the Second, the Twins are gazing with more than usual anxiety towards the weather signs in the Third, the home of Mr. Silver. Mr. Silver employs em-ploys a large corps of men at the iron works, and with such skillful manipulators as the Heavenly Heav-enly Twins handling his campaign, it may be expected ex-pected that the Third precinct delegation will have in its personnel a large and important smattering smat-tering of foundrymen, who will have a large Voice in the nominations. With the seating ofSmoot practically assured by reason of the grfthd jury's failure to secure an indictment against Any alleged al-leged polygamist, the Twins are prepkred to enter the fray with renewed gladiatoritai vigor, and Silver's campaign will be pushed with accelerated energy. v7 t to The news of the launching of Newell for mayor has nevertheless had a disquieting effect on the Twin faction. In the chaotic condition of affairs in the other precincts, they can see the possibility of the Fourth coming in strongly for Newell, and they can readily see that while New-ell's New-ell's qualifications, like those of faithful Ez, would be extremely satisfactory to the senior senator, his election would be very inimical to the present dictatorial attitude of the Twins. Besides, Callister Callis-ter has now moved into the Fourth precinct, and it is to be expected that Kearns, who has always been suspicious of the internal revenue collector and frowns on his gubernatorial aspirations, will watch the lone Twin closely. Still, Mr. Callister is a shrewd political manipulator, and may cause , considerable distress among the Silver Kingites in the Fourth by openly pressing Silver against Newell in the latter's own stronghold. ft i 5 Meanwhile Odell's campaign appears to be expiring and the political outlook now foreshadows foreshad-ows him as a sad-browed Robinson Crusoe at the coming convention. to to O And it may be added that the Independents will have to be looked to in the coming contest. They are already organizing, and it is probable that both Newell and Odell will be smothered in a tide of opposing ballots when the independent candidate is sprung at the coming municipal convention. |
