Show ll if ill Affairs ToltttcaU mm mm A careful scrutiny of the political horizon to HI iwmk ie north royealg the fact that one .William Glas- mml f'lii mann is again overtly active. As usual, the H I f Mayor's pians are fairly well concealed, but it H i eoes not require a field glass to disclose that in- H jj 1! trigulng is his specialty. His present line to H; j'P strategy Is to gain control of the Legislative dele- K, jkjkjj gation from Weber county. This he will at- HL t tempt to do by announcing that he is a candi- Hg !r.2j date for United States Senator. He will prob- H ( Mil ably convince many Weberites that he is serious B III' in this astounding assertion, but people ac- m nmw quainted with William's sleuthful methods will B ' ;j not be so easily deceived. It is more likely that B nmii Ms scheme is to hold the balance of powei in the H JjfP next Legislature, so that ho will have more or 1, less of a decisive voice in the selection of a Sen- 1 ator, even as he did tjwo years ago, when he and ij nis friends, for reasons obvious, presented Mr. jj r. Kearns with the Senatorship. The harmony meeting at the headquarters of I the Young Men's Republican club was a very in- leresting gathering of diplomatists. To all ap- pearances knives were permanently sheathed and H the bird which signifies peace perched upon the B chandeliers. T. Kearns extended the palm gra- H clous to George Sutherland and Twin Callister H ' beamed beatifically on Governor Wells, and the luster of their smiles was as the brilliancy of (the sun illumining the snowy peaks of the Island of Aiaska. Many forensic jewels were scattered lavishly by Mr. Kearns in hiB address to the harmonizers. A great tumult followed his announcement that he did not desire, any change In the Senatorship. ' Viking Lawsqn and Collector of the Port Greene-wald Greene-wald were particularly demonstrative over the Senator's words. George Sutherland loudly applauded the Sen- H ' ! ator's glowing description of the virtues which Wm should be attributes of the next Senator from mM ' , Utah, apparently under the supposition that the mM 1 1 Senator was giving a pen picture of him (Suther- H M land). HH ,i One of the Senator's statements caused con- WMt , fi &iderable speculation. "What we want," said he, Wm H& referring to the coming Senatorial contest, "is a H i j lair field and no favors." This revolutionary IH 'Jy move of trying to secure a Senatorship without mW nj purchasing it caused a great sensation. Many ili or Tom's henchmen who were present are still j wondering whether the reference to "no favors" meant that he was going to hide his check book I during the coming festivities. However, the meeting was a great success. The only circumstance conducive to grief was the absence of Manager Anderson of the Callister Gubernatorial petard. Callister himself was present, pres-ent, though, and was greeted with a storm of applause ap-plause when, in a brief speech, he made his oft-repeated oft-repeated but famous announcement that as a lederal office holder, he was out of politics. This ended the ceremonies, after Willard Snyder had made a behest of $100 to the library fund, thereby forcing Mr. T. Kearns to do likewise, like-wise, albeit he did so after a long and agonizing pause and in a voice which Indicated that the strain might bring on a hemorrhage. t & Fisher Harris almost succeeded in bringing out a new Democratic candidate for Governor during the week. He urgently and earnestly advocated ad-vocated Mayor R. P. Morris for the place The joke is that Mr. Morris seriously considered the matter. A friend of Fisher's suggested that he wait until after the next municipal election and ' see whether Morris will be able to carry his own i district for Mayor. W w to It is generally conceded that Henry Peery will be the choice of the Democrats for national committeeman. The other competitors for the place will be David Bvans and A. H. Tarbet ( lv Manager Anderson is uncertain regarding a third term venture for County Commissioner, as he is opposing a third term for Governor Wells in order to take care of Twin Callister. His third term views may change, however, if Governor Gov-ernor Wells is successful. , . C. E. Loose has been definitely decided upon as national Republican committeeman by the delegation to the national convention. All of which goes to show that the Democratic system i,f choosing their national committeeman in State convention is a proper and judicious one. |
