Show Hl CLIFFORD AND SOME SQUARE BOXING. Hwj Lovers of boxing in the city are commencing to HR' ', wake up to the fact that they miss the excellent BBBBBu 1 H'; ;' j sport, and also that the men at present endeavor- Hff r i 1 inE to resurrect the game are to be banked on in Ha (It regard to the article they propose giving the local HI 1 public. Hof iljjK ! Eugene Thompson, the well known wrestler H li and gymnasium director, is at the head of the new Hp P Western Athletic club, and has the entire confi- H mm dcne of the patrus o' tb'., r.ir HB Clifford is a strong favorite here, owing to his B II gentlemanly behavior, both out and in the squared BHE W m circle, and also won a host of friends by his excel- BBwtPS lent work as a member of the Salt Lake ball club Hffiif9r ; during a portion of last season. When the proposition was first made Irwin balked, as he thought there would be nothing in it from the reports he had received from here about the wonderful harvest of gold coin fighters had reaped here in the past, but just to boom the game and show that he meant business, Clifford came out with an offer of a side bet with his own money large enough to cause Irwin to consider con-sider the matter, and almost without doubt, the men have signed articles by this time. Clifford is very confident of trimming the Cali-'ornian, Cali-'ornian, and is all the more anxious to mix with him as he tried to get on a match with the latter while he was out on the coast recently and failed. During the past week several meal ticket mit artists have dropped into the city in the wake of the Fitz-Jeff combination, and sent out all kinds of declarations as to their ability and what they would do to some of the ring performers of assured as-sured reputation if they were only given the chance, but they will all blow up when the "Move On" bunch gets after them. Mexican Pete got his regular dose in the Jag Citadel last week, and was sent up for five days an unusually light, and, therefore, disappointing sentence for the husky gent but was redeemed by his enemy (?) Jeffries, who paid the fine. It bas been rumored around among the bunch that there was a chance of Pete's being taken along on the renewed tour of the combination for advertising purposes and to act as the punching bag for the champion, but the proposition looks poor to the wise ones. By the way, the big champion has been enjoying enjoy-ing himself hugely on his tour, and Salt Lake has not been the slowest city along the line to give him a warm time during his sojourn here. But the big doings, according to report, came off in Helena. It seems the troupe had a couple of days lay-off before showing in the next town, and Jeff preferred to spend vacation in Helena, while Fitz continued on. The "champ" had a whole bundle of friends in the Motnana city, and, herding them all together, he took possession of the main music hall in the place ,and for a day and a night there was one of the most "sulphuric acid" times that the gang had ever been mixed up with. Jeff simply unloosed a wad of the "always welcome" that would have choken a horse, and the juice of the grape flowed like the "wet" comes down City Creek canyon. & jt & Bowling is having quite a vogue this winter. In fact, it appears to be the leading sport, as the ice hockey games are to the bad. Three new alleys al-leys have been put in, andt he old ones have all been thoroughly renovated. The Bismarck especially espec-ially is in remarkably fine shape, the alleys having one of the smoothest surfaces inthe city. The Harmonie, Brunswick, Fritz Reitmann's and the Elks are all in first class shape, and it looks as if the new one being built on Third South street, next to the Annex, between West Temple and Main, will be a star surface. It is proposed to form a bowling club at this resort, and also at the Bismarck, and it will be endeavored to obtain entrance Into the city bowling league or start a . new one in conjunction with the Newspaper league which is about to be formed. An enormous business is being done at two prominent skating resorts, the one at the corner of Ninth South and State streets, and Agricultural Park. & & & An endeavor is being made to rib up a fancy skating match for the championship of the state, and several calls have been made to hold the contest, con-test, the last occasion being last Sunday, but it fell through, owing to the non-appearance of the cute young man who clairr3 the championship Ber-tricio Ber-tricio Margetts. Bertricio claimed to have been unable to put in an appearnce owing to his suffering suffer-ing from a severe case of "ping pong ankle." An other "try" will be made to pull off the match to. morrow afternoon at Agricultural park. Handball and indoor baseball have become quite popular, although the interest in the latter has not been so great as it was a year ago. At the Y. M. C. A. and the University of Utah is where the interest is centered. Basket ball has just started on the boom, and Tuesday night a meeting was held at the Y. M. C. A. and a league formed and scheduled rawn up. The clubs will open this week, and all contests are to be held in the L. D. S. U. gymnasium. "Farmer" Fred Smith, captain of the champion National Guard football eleven, was chosen official referee for the season. |
