Show WASHINGTON. The anniversary of Washington's birthday will come again on Monday next. His statue in the niche of ages grows grander with every return-in return-in year; the halo that crowns his brows takes on deeper and holier tints. His was one of the great souls that are given to the world when Destiny is engaged in laying the foundations of nations. He steadied his country through the stress of a great war; he stood a rock of defense while a new nation na-tion was rounded into form; he put aside every whisper of unworthy ambition. The new nation hailed him as "Father"; the title has grown brighter under the friction of a century; he threw away a crown, but for the sacrifice secured for himself Immortality. His grave Is growing more and more a shrine; his memory is taking on new splendors with every unrolling year. |
