long since in some of our states where public money has been turned over to a church to operate the schools The church school quickly became the only school in the community and all the children of all faiths had to attend and be taught by teachers wearing the garb of the religious order and had to learn the common prayers and rituals of that organization State school laws forced children to attend these schools No creed has a right to ask any government agency to furnish it public money to finance any of its projects because a church project is conducted to strengthen the position of the church which the sponsors it or to advertise and propagandize work of that particular church and where the state is protecting the independence of all religions it should not turn over any funds to any of them or to all of them on any basis whatever for any purpose This point of view leads us into a consideration of other things than just education Hospitals have become so expensive to operate that they do not pay their way on a commercial basis as does a garage or a grocery store Churches have maintained many ofthem in an effort to assist suffering humanity yet even in this field the effort has not The hospitals are always been entirely unselfish not always just places to treat the ill but are established to promote the interests of the religious body which builds and maintains them as a missionary endeavor and this is perfectly all right if the church in charge builds and operates them with its own money It may surprise some of our readers to know that this is not always the situation and that Government money yours and mine has built hospitals one not so farm from here which the public was led to believe was built by a church and which is operated by a church No religious organization should have a pipeline into the Federal treasury to assist it in this kind of an effort any more than to support its school or than to sup- port its minister Well there are the logical arguments on both sides Weigh them yourself They are important even tho Federal aid to education is not likely for some time vet Mrs Storting Barton and childVisitors at the home of Mrs of
