Governor Cutler hns issued his Arbor Day proclamation inviting the co-operation of the people generally in its observance Wednesday, April 15th. Following the preamble the message says: "Since Arbor day started in Nebraska, 36 years ago, its observance has spread all over the United States. The tangible result in this country has been the planting of over 600,000,000 trees for the most part of individual school children, besides the interest aroused in animate and inamatc nature and in forestry. In Ireland a similar movement is now fairly launched, and is rapidly spreading spread-ing throughout the country. It is interesting to know that an American importation, Arbor Day, is being made use of (in Ireland) in furthering the ends of forestry. 'I recommend that as in the pist, the day be universally observed throughout the state in the planting of trees and shrubs and flowers and lawns, the cleaning and renovating of premises, the beautifying of public and private grounds, and in other work suitable to the day. In no way can beauty and utility be better' combined. 'To the school officers and teachers and pupils this observance is especially commended, both for the benefits it will confer and the lessons it will teach. Officers of the schools and of other public pub-lic and private institutions, are requested to join in the general observance of the day, with such exercises ex-ercises in conjunction with their tree planting as will tend to impress its great importance on the minds of our present and future citizens." State Convention in Salt Lake May 7 th. Thursday, May 7th, is the day selected for the holding of the Republican state convention to name six deligates to the Republican national convention June 16 and the Salt Lake theater is the place selected for holding the convention. This action was taken at a meeting of the Republican state committee in Salt Lake City last Monday morning. The meeting was well attended. Thete were present representatives from nineteen nine-teen of the twenty-seven counties of the state. Rudolph Kuchler, the member .from this country, was in attendance, or. course. The meeting was presided over by Chairman Wesley K. Wallun and the best of feeling prevailed. Representation for the state cnovention was fixed at one deligate for every ninety votes ctst for Joseph Howell for Congress at the last general election. This will provide for n state convrn-tiori convrn-tiori "0172 deligates. T FO? TEMPERANCE. From the Deseret Evening News April 7th. President Smith's statement at the opening ot the Conference that the presiding authorities of the church "are in harmony with the movement fward temperance," and that the people should decide this question by reasonable and conservative measures that will effectively diminish the crimes due to drunkenness, ought to find a ready support among all classes of people. There can be no doubt that the people of this nation are slowly becoming aroused to the enor. mity of the loss in money, in happiness, and in true manhood and womanhood, that the present traffic tra-ffic in liquor actually represents. If safe and conservative measures for the restriction of this traffic shall be resisted and defeated by the liquor interests, then the people are justified in restoringto extreme and drastic methods. When once pubic attention is fully centered upon the evil ot saloons, these places will be put under restrictions more or less severe, according to the nature of the resistance these interests interpose to block the needed refotms. We might remind the proprietors of the liquor business that the saloon is an institution ditficult tu defend,' A St. Louis contemporary remarks in humorous vein that though fifty orators are said to have gone out of Chicago to defend the saloon in the Illinois local option campaigns, yet the friends of "the legal drink" are already shaking their heads. They argue that where the danger of saying the wrong thing is so great, Marc Antony himself would hesitate to say anything. It is not like a political campaign. In politics anyone with good lungs' can do something. There are certain well known platitudes and catch phrases which have never failed to sway someone. Moreover, the crowd is wholly made up of men, " who are not very bright as a sex, and an easily decoyed into what is not good for them. But the lipuor issue is one in which speaking upon the saloon side is inexperienced. It is not served by axiomatic truisms of proved effectiveness. The crowds are largely made up of women, which is a menace, for these are mentally keen as a sex, for the most part are married, and moved by a whole-hearted contempt for the asseverations of man." We think the wisest course is to contend for the strictest possible regulation, if prohibition cannot can-not be obtained by popular vote. For restriction would be a good introduction to prohibition.
