Show SUDDEN DEATH OF D. B. HILL Man Who Was Long the Ruling Spirit of New York Democracy Expires After Brief Illness. Albany, N. Y. David Bennett Hill is dend. Senator Hill had been suffering suf-fering from a cold and bullous attack at-tack of threo weeks' standing. Ho was sitting up In bed to take a drink of water when ho was seized with acuto dilation of tho heart. Death followed quickly, with no ono but a nurso nt his bedside. David Bennott Hilt was born August Au-gust 29, 1843. Ho was elected to the assembly in 1870 nnd again in 1871. For many years Mr. Hill was a member mem-ber of tho Democratic stato committee, commit-tee, nnd In 187G nnd 1884 ho was a delegato to tho national convention, which nominated Tllden and Clove-land, Clove-land, respectlvly. In 1882 ho was elected lieutenant governor on tho samo ticket with Grovor Cleveland, and following Cleveland's election to tho presidency of tho United States Mr. Hill became governor, subsequently elected for two terms. He wns governor for seven years. In 1891 Mr. Hill was elected United States senator nnd In 1891 ho was onco moro tho candidate for governor, but wns defeated by Levi P. Morton, his Republican opponent. Mr. Hill was tho candidate for tho nomination for president In 1892, but Grovcr Cloveland was elected for that office. In 1894 Mr. Hill was credited with bolng tho political sponsor of Alton B. Parker, who was nominated for tho presidency by tho Democratic national na-tional convention at St. Louis. Following Fol-lowing that election Mr. Hill announced an-nounced his pormanont retirement from politics and since that tlmo had dovoted hlmsolf to his law practice. |
