Natalie Cottam, 17, a junior at Escalante High school, was recently awarded a plaque by the Southwest Sterling Scholar Committee in St George. The plaque was presented by Escalante High School coach Jim Smith and read "Special Achievement Award. For her outstanding accomplishments, achievements, persistence, exceptional excep-tional efforts and determination in obtaining numerous goals." Besides her family, Barbara and lance Jaggar, Jim and Margo Smith and families, all of Escalante; there were the families of Rula and Leavitt Christensen, Kan-osh; Kan-osh; Bud and Wanda Woolsey, Morgan; Mor-gan; Dewey and Remola Woolsey, Bicknell; B ill ie Deen and LaDon Ellett, West Valley City; EINora and Reed Williams, Spanish Fork; Warren and Kathleen Woolsey, Cedar City; Donald Cowles, Salt Lake City; Robert Woolsey, Delta; and Weldo Woolsey, Jimmy Woolsey Wool-sey and the family of Barry Barn-son, Barn-son, all of Escalante. (See ESCALANTE on pg. 3A) ESCALANTE From Page 2-A The reunion was a weekend campout at the Barnson RV park west of town. Sharon Dale, Shirley Shir-ley and Thelma Marsh attended each day with Warren and Kathleen Woolsey. Vonda Pollock was in town for the Porter reunion over the weekend and decorated the cemetery also. The Esclante Chamber of Commerce Com-merce has a project going to help the Escalante Camp of the Daughters Daugh-ters of Utah Pioneers raise money to restore their building which houses their DUP Museum. They are selling a beautiful coverlet with pictures of all the historic buildings in Escalante on it. You will want to see it. They have one on display at the First Security Bank in Escalante where there are forms to complete if you want to purchase one or more. I.C. and Eva Haws, Brigham City, spent last week here at their summer home. They had a visit from their grandkids also: Brian and Shanalee Manwaring and son Braxton of American Fork and Beth and lake Owens and son loshua, Joseph. They had a great time sightseeing at Hell's Backbone, getting their feet wet at Calf Creek, then they went to Posey lake on a fishing trip and were met there buy Jake's parents. They all went home over the mountain by way of Wayne County. J.C, Eva and Dudley and Hazel Spencer all went to Cedar City on Wednesday. They took flowers for relatives in the cemetery there. They also visited their sister-in-law LaPriel Spencer and took her out to dinner. They say she is doing well and planning a trip to Provo to visit a grandson. Owen and Pat Gonder had Owen's mother Mollie Gonder here during the week, then Owen took her back to her home in Garrison. A lot of our guys around here have been busy fighting the forest fire in the Salt Gulch-Death Hollow area. Hope they have it conquered by the time you read this! Elaine Cottam is recovering from surgery on her shoulder. She sustained an injury when she was in a car accident a few months ago. Norman and Ardis Christensen are home from Oregon where they attended graduation exercises for their grandson Clint Lyman. Clint is a son of Arthur and Julie Lyman, formerly of Boulder. The Chris-tensens Chris-tensens also visited at the home of their son and daughter-in-law Clyde and Terrie Christensen in Tooele on their way back home. Dwight and Jaleen Vance are here from Texas and have their motorhome parked on the lot where Jaleen's parents, the late Neal and Alberta Liston, used to live. Lynn Gates is still trying to get his knee to act natural since he had surgery on it. Hope you will be running races before long, Lynn! Pat Sorenson is home from Mesa, Ariz., and is walking with the help of a walker. She had to have her hip pinned following a fall a while back. Wayne and Pat Banks, St. George, were in town last Thursday. Thurs-day. They came for the funeral of Janet Spencer, but Wayne had gotten his days mixed up and they were a day early. They were not able to stay over as they had two of Pat's little nieces and had to get them back home. It was good to visit with them though, Alice Heaps Day and her cousin Clella Smith, Salt lake City, visited here with Lois Spencer and other relatives during the week. Marj Isaacson, Tremonton, is here with her daughter and son-in-law Victory and Richard Crawford. Ron and Tina Fuller and four children Gresham, Wis., are visiting visit-ing at the home of Tina's .mother Garneal Smith. Janeen Duncan, Preston, and Kristin Snedegar an tiny daughter Hailey, came from Loa to visit Arnold and Deon Alvey and attend the Porter reunion. The Cottam family spent their share of time with the doctors last week. Doyle and Brent Cottam took Thelma to St. George to get some work with her pacemaker and her doctors ended up giving her a new one. Then Doyle and Thel-ma's Thel-ma's son-in-law Sherrell Ott, tropic, was taken into the hospital for emergency treatment. It never rains but what it pours, huh? Right now we could use a different type of rain. Jan and Stan Liston went to St. George and were involved in a fender-bender. Stan is still walking walk-ing with an accent with his some broken ribs. Que and Cecil Dawn Porter were also lucky to get out of their car with a few bruises and sore spots after they went off the road between Smith Ranch and the oil wells. Their car was pretty well mashed up. Michelle and Kory Liles, Cedar City, brought their little two-year-old girl Ashley here to celebrate her birthday with her grandparents Bonnie and Jeris Liles, Sharon Dale and Shirley Marsha and Thelma Marsh. Some of the people visiting in town for the graveside services for Janet Griffin Spencer were: Boyd and Trudy Griffin, Cleveland; Roma and Ken Clark, Salt lake City; Lane and Marian Foote, Vie and Milt Jolley, Harold and Inarene Griffin, Howard and Doris Gagon, and Cheryl Cox, all of St. George; John Black, Las Vegas; Merle Gillins and Vie Louise Marshall, Minersville; Renon Reed and Alvin and Joan Cowles, Richfield; Diane and Robby Pierce, Richmond; Rich-mond; Vernon and Peg Roundy, Monroe; Jolyn Peterson, Payson; Van and Betty Wiley, Antimony; Neal and Faye Jepsen, Truman Lyman, Neta Poulson, Renon Peterson, and Camille Ballard, all Boulder; and Tom Reynolds, Panguitch. Apologies to those I missed. There were numerous friends who cam from Orem, too. Our heartfelt sympathy to Jim and his extended family; to Janet's mom Ruby Griffin and to her extended family. We know the void will be hard to fill. |
