Show DWR Project Will Improve Fishing On the Boulder Mountains .jThc Utah Wildlife Board has 'jgiven the Division of Wildlife Resources Re-sources approval to improve fishing on the Boulder Mountains by removing re-moving stunted brook trout from 13 lakes. Five other lakes will be monitored, moni-tored, and brook trout removed, if stunting starts to occur. A total of 72 other fisheries on the Boulder Mountains are doing well and are not part of the approved ap-proved study to remove and replace fish. In addition to approval by the board, the project was also supported sup-ported by the citizen Regional Advisory Council for the Southern Region. Pettehgill said an overabundance of brook trout is one reason the trout aren't growing as they should. In some cases, brook trout also must compete with redside shiners and mountain suckers for food. Pettengill said the treatments to remove the stunted brook trout could begin as early as this fall and would probably take about six years to complete. One or two lakes would probably be treated each year. After the brook trout are removed, re-moved, four of the 13 lakes, and three tributaries, would receive Colo-rado River cutthroat trout. The nine remaining lakes would probably be stocked with tiger trout, splake or rainbow trout. |
