Show Fund Raising Underway For Escalante-Boulder Veterans Memorial ESCALANTE - Although plans to build a memorial to honor the Escalante and Boulder veterans of foreign wars from World War I to the present began several months earlier, fund raising activities got underway under-way in earnest during the 24th of July celebration this year. The response by former veterans and civic organizations has already brought in over $7,000. The proposed site for the monument is the northeast corner cor-ner of the city park where the old Red Brick Elementary School building once stood. The monument will be nicely landscaped with three 7'x4'x4" red marble panels bearing the engraved name of anyone who was living in EscalanteBoulder at the time of hisher entrance into the service, or who was raised in Escalante or Boulder prior to hisher induction or enlistment. The marble panels will be surrounded by a fountain and walkways cast in brownish-red, brownish-red, ripple concrete to represent the native red sandstone of Escalante. On one side of the marble panels will be a flagpole that will fly the flag day and night. On the opposite side will be a beautiful life-size bronze statue of two soldiers in battle gear. The monument will be lit with floodlights during the night. In the walkways surrounding the monument, memorial blocks may be placed in the concrete by anyone who wishes to honor a family member whose name does not appear on the marble panels. This may be the name of any veteran a family wishes to honor, whether or not heshe ever lived in Escalante or Boulder. Placing of the block will require a minimum donation dona-tion of $50. The estimated cost of the memorial will be around $35,000. To help defray construction con-struction costs the memorial committee is requesting that families of service menwomen donate $50 for each service manwoman whose name will be engraved on the marker. Of course larger donations will be greatly appreciated, since the money collected from families will not completely cover the cost, and the committee will have to seek donations elsewhere. else-where. Support for the project has been very positive and the memorial committee wishes to express their thanks to all those who have already made financial finan-cial contributions to the project. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the project (which is income tax deductible) may do so by sending a check to Escalante-Boulder Veterans Memorial Committee, Box 421, Escalante, Utah 84726. In conjunction with the Bald Eagle (Escalante) Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the memorial committee com-mittee will be sponsoring a Veterans Day display and program pro-gram at Escalante High School to honor all servicemen and women. An artist's rendition by noted Escalante artist, Lynn Griffin, of what the monument will look like when completed, will be on display. Donations will be accepted and encouraged at this time. |
