He's horrible. He's a bully...I've even shared the final management report with a friend of mine outside this company. When she read the report she cursed the president herself. A lot of people don't like him. But don't let anything I've told you leave this room." Yet this same leader is the first to quickly accuse her employees of spreading gossip. Tom's group report was due four months ago. Every other manager had to have their report in on time. Yet Tom will slam an employee if they are late on a report they owe him. He will even reprimand an employee in front of others, "You need to get your priorities straight!" Dr. Yaebin swears profusely in her classroom, speaks badly of other teachers and will tell a student to "sit down" if their presentation isn't up to par. Yet she is the first to tell a student, "You need to be professional." Each of these leaders is a "do as I say, not as I do" leader. Unfortunately, they do not see that in the very areas they are lacking, they are projecting their faults onto those they led. They also tend to be hypocritical and lead by the adage, "it's my way or the highway." Don't Be a, "Do as I say, not as I dii" leader Compare their leadership style to someone like Dr. Smith who will tell his students, "Everyone gets an A in this course," and then coach each student to provide a way from them to come up with a plan for them to earn that A. His classrooms are fun, engaging, come alive, are filled with hope, and ones' that students don't even want to miss. Dr. Smith believes in finding what each student's doing right instead of wrong. Or even Ms. Farmer's classroom where she tells stories and even acts them out in front of the class. And when she comments about classroom strengths she might say, "Melody, you are so good with investigating skills, how might you approach solving this crime?" Author David Harold Fink said, "People are more easily led than driven." Still, some leaders feel that they need to have a rigid environment, distrust those that follow them, walk around with a sense of entitlement, and be a "do as I say, not as I do leader." These leaders usually have low self-esteem and for whatever reason have to lead based on fear. Yet, American businessman Ross Perot said, "Lead and inspire people. Don't try to manage and manipulate If you are a "do as I say, not as I do leader," you most likely have followers who have low morale, don't want to be in your organization, in your classroom or on your team. Instead they will show up because they "have" to not because they "want" to. Unfortunately, when people are forced and or in a rigid environment, productively among other things suffer. Yet, getting cooperation and earning respect is really quite simple. Treat people right, and you will see a turn around. Even American president John Quincy Adams thought so, "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." If not, just make a simple decision to make a change since Proverbs 29:18 tells us, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." As she inspected a likely candidate, the trainer told her, "He doesn't like men." "Perfect," my sister-in-law thought and took the dog. Then one day she was approached by two men in a people. I'd had enough of my employees' abusing their allotted break time. In an effort to clarify my position, I posted a sign on the bulletin board: "Starting immediately, your 15-minute breaks are being cut from a half-hour to 20 minutes." Non-hostile Takeover Hockey Injury A very successful businessman had a meeting with his new son-in-law. "I welcome you into the family," said the man. "To show you how much we care for you, I am making you a 50-50 partner in my business. All you have to do is go to the factory everyday and learn the operation." The son-in-law interrupted. "I hate factories. I can't stand the noise." "I see." replied the father-in-law, "Well, then you'll work in the office and take charge of some of the operations." "I hate office work," said the son-in-law. "I can;t stand being stuck behind a desk." "Wait a minute," said the father-in-law. "I just made you half owner of a money-making industry, but you don't like factories, and won't work in an office. What am I going to do with you?" "Easy," said the son-in-law. "Buy me out."
