Even with warmer weather on the horizon, mule deer still find it very difficult to survive. In fact they may be in their most vulnerable state of existence right now. All winter long deer have been feeding on sagebrush and dried grasses. While these foods fill their stomachs, they offer very little in actual nutrition. Deer must spend almost all of their time feeding in order to get enough calories to stay alive. That is why it is so important that they are left to feed undisturbed. When you consider what life is like for mule deer in the summer and fall you can easily see why they need this time to concentrate on feeding and resting. Mule deer bucks spend most of the spring and summer feeding alone or in bachelor groups and begin growing new antlers for use in the fall. This is there chance to gain weight while feeding on the lush growth of the season. They begin in the early spring in the lower elevations and move up the mountain as the snow melts and food becomes available. Antler growth reaches it's maximum in early to mid September and the velvet covering is rubbed off revealing the polished, hardened antlers. In late October and into November the bucks will begin moving closer to the does and protecting them from other bucks. This period of time is called the rut and bucks use their antlers to fend off rivals for the right to breed with the does and produce next years offspring. During this time it is not uncommon for the bucks to go without food for weeks and burn most of the fat that they may have gained over the summer. When the rut is over, they have little chance to fatten up again for the winter months. Consequently, they go into winter in a condition that makes survival questionable. The does give birth to fawns in mid spring and spend the spring and summer nursing and caring for their young. Fortunately, they have the summer months with good feed to nourish their bodies. But with fawns to nurse they too have a difficult time gaining enough weight to get them through the winter. When winter comes, they are in better shape than the bucks but they are usually pregnant and have just weened their young so they aren't in the best condition either. The fawns grow very fast being nourished by their mother's milk and the lush feed of Summer. Many of them fall prey to coyotes and other predators, never making it to the fall or winter. The ones that do survive, have spent all of their energy in growth and have little opportunity to store fat for winter. They too are in poor condition when it turns cold and the plants go dormant. With a little knowledge of deer behavior and their life cycle, it is not hard to understand why they need a quiet, restful winter with no disturbance to distract them from their survival pursuits. Winter is a great time to watch deer as they often venture close to the road in the sage-brush flats to feed and rest. Just be sure to stay in your car and watch from a distance with binoculars or a spotting scope leaving them to work out their survival undisturbed.
