Show IN OUR TOWN FYI PANGUITCH By: Mack Oetting Panguitch High School started their school off with a “splash” literally this school year. After business, introductions, and class spirit, the students adjourned to the track field where they enjoyed an hour of water activities. (Sure is nice to have an “in” with Mitch Owens). The “SPLASH” theme was to remind the student that doing things with a “splash” will makes for an educational, fun and exciting school year. Panguitch High School is fast reaching 500 students in our schools. PHS has about 210 in the high and middle schools, and 260 at the elementary. We are getting quite a few students from Hatch and Spry. Love is in the air. As I am writing this column, Chelsea is hosting a bridal shower at her parent’s home (Birch’s) for Oaklee Orton. It sure seems like we have had a ton of weddings this summer. Oaklee played on all of the sport’s team during her years at Panguitch High as a starter. As a senior, in one of the first basketball games of the season, Oaklee blew out her knee and her season was over, or was it? I think that any one who attended the Basketball State Championship that year will ever forget what happened. With the game in its last minutes, Panguitch in the lead, time out was called and Oaklee came in the game for the Lady Cats and took several shots. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the audience. This was Oaklee’s third State Basketball championship. Now she is getting married and getting her degree from SUU this year. These kids are growing up way to fast! Halie Sawyer, Oaklee’s team mate all those year, was a starter on the women’s University of Utah Mountain West Championship basketball team, last year. Halie says that Utah Women’s Team has recruited some really good freshmen and will be a team to be reckoned with this year. Halie’s brother, Bret who played on one of Panguitch’s State Championship Basketball team as a center, he and his wife Kim had their first baby recently. Bret is about 6’6 and his wife Kim is well over 6’ the baby weighed in at 11. 3 lb and was 24’’ tall. I know he came out dribbling a ball. Congratulation to the Sawyers on their first grandchild, it looks like you got a start on a new team. We have a new street, added on to 100 West and 400 North, this openings up 3 building lots. Dr. Miller Page 5 The Garfield County Insider September 3, 2009 has a home under construction there, along with four other new homes in Panguitch. Congratulations to you all. The Beehive Beemers called Pat to let her know that a generous donation to Panguitch Sub-for-Santa was in the mail. The “Beem- ers” have been big supporters for the Sub-For-Santa program for several years. They have been coming to Panguitch for a summer activity yearly. They heard about our Sub-for-Santa program and have been big supporters ever since. The reason they donate… It is because they are treated so well in Panguitch. So many thanks to all of you who are responsible for their great time here and their desire to return. This weekend is Labor Day, last chance to get out and enjoy the scenery. We will be going over to Parowan to the parade that starts at 10 am. The Iron County Fair is on and there is a lot to see, including a car show. Next time you are at the Post Office check out the sun flowers at Bob Schermerhorn’s house, their on the south east corner of his lot, they are so big they are bent over. Happy Birthday to Juanita Talbot, she will be 94 September 6th. Keep up the good stuff. Mack O.
