Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 March 26, 2009 Every1Counts LEGAL NOTICES Look for the Free Perms LEVY AND NOTICE OF SHERIFF’S SALE REAL PROPERTY By Cynthia Kimball Humphreys “I love your perm!” “Thanks,” I’d say. “Where’d you get it?” “Um, you don’t want to get a perm the way I got it,” was my typical response. That would be through chemotherapy (chemo), thank you. Literally, my hair grew back in ringlets. It was absolutely gorgeous. The best part? I didn’t pay one cent for it (well, sort of. Depends how we define pay for it). Almost 15 years ago this spring, I was diagnosed with breast cancer while living in Japan and teaching English. But, I need to tell you, cancer has been good to me. I am who I am today because of it. It’s molded and shaped me (and still is) into becoming a better human being. Not that I was a bad person prior to cancer, but I could have been a whole lot better (can’t we all?). It helped me focus on what’s important (family, service, faith, a positive attitude, determination, and that life isn’t always about me). Other patients taught me about love and compassion and how beautiful someone’s spirit can be regardless of having hair or parts or not. And, I’ve learned that a smile can go a long way. One older man (I guess I could define older, but I won’t because I’m headed that way), who was not in good spirits in the chemo room, looked hopeless and like death, literally. So, I smiled at him and said, “Don’t you give up.” And, well, he looked at me, his wife, too, like I was crazy. But, again, I said, with a smile, “Don’t you give up.” To which he still looked at me like I was crazy only a little less so. And then a miracle happened the third time I said with a smile, “Don’t you give up.” He lifted his head and smiled as a lonely solitary tear eased down his cheek. Now if my getting cancer was solely to bring a smile on that man’s face, then Hallelujah! I never saw him again, but his smile is forever impressioned in my mind. I learned a lot that day. To not give up. No matter what. That people are listening even when we might think otherwise. And about the human spirit and that sometimes our spirits can get in a funk. And that, if we can’t get out of our funk, there’s always an angel (person or situation or experience) to help us do so. That’s, if we look for these angels or free perms or opportunities in disguise. Speaking of, I remember thinking, after my hair grew back in ringlets, “What in the world am I going to do with all of these dang curls?” That was, until, I received compliment after compliment after compliment. And then, I began walking more confidently because my head was being compared to Shirley Temple’s. Now that was a compliment. So the next time life throws you a lemon or you’ve got an employee or boss who you don’t know how to manage, or a child, student, athlete or spouse who’s being unruly, look for the free perms or blessing in disguise. I promise, if you do, you’ll find a lesson. Maybe two. Probably more. And who said free wasn’t good?
