The road to the Region 15 Title started out relatively easy for the Cats, Thursday night, as they continued their domination over the Milford Tigers, 65 to 34. Eight Bobcats made the scoring column as they coasted to the win However, Friday the road got much rougher as they collided with the defending State Champion Escalante Moquis. In the opening half Panguitch led by as much as 11 points until both Leach and Bateman developed foul trouble. With both of their top players benched, the Cats had to go to a slow down game which ultimately cost them the momentum and a very talented Moqui squad took advantage to close within 5 points at half. The Moqui defense shut down the Bobcats offense in the 3rd quarter, and led by Ky Roundy, outscored them 14 to 5 for a 37 to 33 lead. In the final 8 minutes, despite making only 8 of 18 from the free throw line, the Bobcats, led by Leach, Bateman, and Barney forged ahead to a 56 to 54 lead. With just a few ticks on the game clock, as Bobcat fans held their breath, the Moqui's Brace Griffin launched a shot from mid -court that bounced off the back rim, just barely missing a winning 3 point bucket, and the Cats were headed for the title game. Saturday's Championship game with the Piute Thunderbirds was another "heart stopper," as the lead changed hands back and forth throughout the game. With the Bobcats ahead 46 to 42 and just seconds left in the contest, Piute's Scott Dalton canned a 3 pointer and was fouled in the process. Scott made the free throw to tie the game and send it into overtime. In the O.T. Panguitch jumped out to an early lead and despite Piute's pressure and resurgence maintained that lead as Leach, Bateman, and Barney, led the way to pull out a 60 to 55 victory and the Region Crown. In the tournament Josh Bateman had a total of 58 points, Cameron Leach Had 40 and 40 rebounds, and Brady Barney had 31, including 5 from 3 point range. As a point of interest; Cameron Leach has had 21 double-doubles in 22 games this season. Named to the All Region Team were-Josh Bateman and Cameron Leach of Panguitch, Scott Dalton, Trever Torgerson, and Skyler Steed of Piute, Ky Roundy and Devin McLemore of Escalante, Nate Hoyt of Valley, Kaden Chynoweth of Bryce Valley, and David Blackburn of Wayne. GRANDPA'S KITTIES Wednesday last I watched my neighbor go to get the mail. Two young kitties followed him, one dark, one kind of pale. Winding in amongst his legs, those furry little jokers. Tails sticking all straight up, like fuzzy, miniature pokers. My neighbor don't like kitties, he's often heard to say, But still he feeds the little buggers something every day. With all the grub they get from him they scarcely need a mouse. , Lifei*floo.d for youfhful kitties, over to Grandpa's house. ; - A baChnfcmari; He's got some pals to set around and talk with, And when he goes to get the mail, he's got the kitties to walk with. I'm glad to see them sometimes, out of my window, live, Those little exclamation-point tails, trailing him up the drive. This poem and others by Ray Conrad are available on CD or by book.
