Svrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com Greg and Megan Leech came home to Utah for the Clarke Family Reunion. They are living in Hawaii where Greg is stationed. While they were here visiting Greg's brother, Tim Leech, and his family came to visit. Chrishell and their three children came along for the visit. Chrishel is the daughter of Rod and Kathern Syrett of Bryce and granddaughter of Mary Etta Chynoweth and Jean Syrett. They all stayed with Elaine and Helma for one night and then Tim and Chrishel and their children stayed with Rod and Kathern. Tim and Chrishel live in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where he got a great job after graduation from Utah State. Berkley and Susan Thompson have been entertaining their four grandsons who are here visiting for a while. It is always fun to come to Grandma and Grandpa's to stay. Congratulations to T. J. and SheilaJohnson ol Flagstaff, Arizona who have a new little daughter. She was born on July 1st. She weighed in at 7 lbs.and 4 ozs. and was 19" long and has been named Avery Linda afterT. J.'s mother. Sheila is the daughter of Rod and Kathern Syrett of Bryce. She is the granddaughter of Mary Etta Chynoweth of Tropic and Jean Syrett of Cedar City. The older brother and sisters at home are excited to have a new little sister. She had a rough start but all seems to be going well and she is home with her family. Well the time for Family Reunions is upon us and I hope you will all call or email with vour information. The new landscaping at the Tropic Ward is beautiful, but I wonder how come they took out the grass to only plant some more. I think the work that was done was great and adds to the area. Just like the plants and trees that have been put in on our Main street. We are becoming a regular place of beauty. Now if we can just get that sidewalk out to the Cemetary. The Arthur Syrett's, David Jensen's and Mike Jensen's all went camping last week and had a great time riding bikes and four-wheelers and visiting. We missed the one unable to come and join us but it was fun anyway. I have heard many favorable comments on the 4th of July activities. Everyone I have talked with said they had a great time and appreciated the efforts of those responsible. This coming Saturday the i/2 Marathon is being run so hope you can support it. Volunteers are always welcome. If you are interested you can call Marsha Holland. The Summer Reading Program is still being run at the Volunteer Center in Tropic so drop in and check out a book. The Bryce Valley Cub Scouts are having their Pack Meeting on the 13th and want to remind all the boys that they need to bring a 2 liter pop bottle to make a rocket with. It must have the lid with it. There will be hamburgers and hot dogs served and the Webelos are furnishing salads, the Bears and Wolves are furnishing desserts. It begins at 5:00 P.M.and everyone will have a great time. Come on out and support your Den. Hope everyone has a great week. Call with your news or e-mail. Thanks. BURR TRAIL ROAD WORK EIS UPDATE The National Park Service and Garfield County announced finalization of a plan to address road work proposed by the county on portions of the Burr Trail within Capitol Reef National Park. The plan takes the form of the Final Environmental Impact Statement / Assessment of Effect (EIS/AE) for Burr Trail Modifications. The document was prepared by the NPS along with three cooperating agencies; Garfield County, the State of Utah and the Federal Highway Administration. The document includes a proposed course of action. The proposed action is'the product of the environmental compliance process that fulfilled the May 30,2001, settlement agreement establishing a mutually agreeable procedure among the NPS, the county, the state, and the National Parks Conservation Association, to address road modifications proposed by Garfield County. Four alternatives were evaluated during the compliance process. Road modifications, to varying degrees, were included in three of the alternatives reviewed. The fourth alternative, the No Action alternative, described the continuation of current conditions. This was the baseline condition against which the other alternatives were compared. One of the alternatives was selected as the proposed action. The proposed action includes several road modifications. Portions of the roads surface are proposed for stabilization using gravel base material placed over a geotextile fabric membrane to keep the grave from sinking into the bentonite substrate. Widening he road is proposed at a narrow spot where a rock currently overhangs the road. Improved drainage structures are proposed at several typically dry, but flash flood prone, wash crossings. These include both paved fords and corrugated metal pipe culverts. Slope protection is proposed along portions of the northern bank of Sandy Creek, adjacent to the road. Environmental consequences of the actions considered in the various alternatives were evaluated to determine their potential effects to air quality; geologic features and landforms, biological soil crusts and soils; vegetation; wildlife; surface water; hydrology, and floodplains; natural soundscapes; ethnographic and ehtnographic landscape resources; public health and safety, visitor use and experience; sociioeconomics; park operations; Garfield County road maintenance operations; and sustainability and long term management. The Final EIS is available at park headquarters and in surrounding county libraries. The final EIS statement will be available for at least 30 days prior to the release of the Record of Decision.
