"Made ya think" Who donated the land upon which the Wide Hollow reservoir was built? How much water did it hold? ESCALANTE DISTRICT RANGER SELECTS GRIFFIN SPRINGS TRAVEL MANAGEMENT ALTERNATIVE Escalante District Ranger Gina Lampman has selected the Forest Service's proposed action as the alternative to be implemented for the Griffin Springs Travel Management Project. The project area encompasses almost 12,000 acres of Dixie National Forest land on Griffin Top, about 15 miles northwest of Escalante, Utah. The proposed action will add about six miles of existing but unauthorized roads to the district's road system, close and/or decommission about 36 miles of existing open roads, and decommission about 16 miles of roads that are already closed to public access. The project restricts motorized travel to designated system routes; cross-country travel and travel on routes not specifically designated open is prohibited. The project also calls for construction of three trailheads, including parking areas, information kiosks and improved access roads, at Willow Bottom, The Gap and Clayton Springs. The Escalante Ranger District designed the project to reduce the number of user-created roads and minimize the environmental impacts of the area's road system, while still meeting the transportation needs of Dixie National Forest visitors and employees. I selected the proposed action for implementation because it's the alternative that best balances the district's needs in the areas of natural resource conservation, recreation opportunities, public and employee safety, and land management objectives," Lampman said. The Dixie National Forest expects to unveil the proposed action for its forestwide motorized travel plan for public review and comment later this summer.
