Show The Garfield County Insider December 11, 2008 Page 3 In our town... bryCe valley area news ...by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com origins of some of our most favorite Christmas Carols Away In A Manager Away in a manager is always the first carol that children are taught. Away in a Manger was originally published in 1885. The publication of Away in a Manger was in a Lutheran Sunday school book and this created the misconception that the lyrics of Away in a Manger were actually written by Martin Luther himself. The author is unknown. The music to Away in a Manger was composed by William J. Kirkpatrick in 1895. Joy to the World The words and lyrics of the old Christmas carol ‘Joy to the World’ were written in 1719 by Isaac Watts (1674-1748). The father of John Watts was a Non-conformist and so extreme were his views that he was imprisoned twice. His father’s influence over Isaac was demonstrated when he choose to attend Non¬conformist Academy at Stoke Newington in preference to a University. Watts was ordained as a Pastor of an Independent congregation. He wrote many hymns and Carols and was awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree by the the University of Edinburgh in 1728. The music to the carol is by George Frederick Handel (1685-1759). Go tell it to the Mountain The words and lyrics of the spiritual Christmas Carol ‘Go tell it to the mountain’are by John W. Work, Jr. (1872-1925). John Work was famous for Folk Songs of the American Negro in Nashville, Tennessee in 1907. He graduated from Fisk University in 1898 and became a teacher. He died on September 7th 1925 in Nashville, the same town he was born in. Oh Holy Night The composer of “O Holy Night,” Adolphe Charles Adam, found himself in the midst of controversy when his song received a negative reaction from French church authorities. The nineteenth-century composer, known for his ballet Giselle, was accused of having “a lack of musical taste” by a French bishop. Happily, society disagreed. Poet Cappeau de Roquemaure added lyrics to Adam’s music, renaming it “Cantique de Noel.” Later, a translation by American composer John Sullivan Dwight brought the English version to our shores. Today, the solemn “O Holy Night” is sung as a popular Christmas Eve solo ‘It Came Upon a Midnight Clear’ When Massachusetts Unitarian minister Edmund Hamilton Sears published his poem “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear” in a church magazine, his anonymity came to a resounding end. The words he wrote were instantly deemed profound by readers, and then set to music by Richard Storrs Willis the following year. An unlikely collaborator, Willis was an editor and music critic for the New York Tribune. Fortuitously, he had also received extensive musical training in Europe, and his work with Sears produced a hymn that was deemed “one of the finest and most beautiful ever written,” by American poet Oliver Wendell Holmes. ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’ Gifted composer Felix Mendelssohn wrote the spirited musical undercurrent that propels the hymn “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” This melody was once part of a cantata that he had written in 1840 and dedicated to the inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg. In 1855, W. H. Cummings became convinced that the music deserved lyrics. He matched Mendelssohn’s melody with words that had been written by Charles Wesley in 1739. Despite extensive editing of the song’s first line, this hymn bore the trademark phraseology of Wesley, the renowned Methodist poet. ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’ Relocating to France in the eighteenth century, Englishman John Francis Wade earned his living by transcribing sheet music and giving music lessons to children. It is not known whether he actually wrote the lyrics for “Adeste Fideles,” or if he came across it in his line of work. Whatever its origin, Wade is credited with the words. He then collaborated with Britain’s John Reading to give the hymn a melody and published it around 1751. Revived a century later, “O Come, All Ye Faithful” became a popular church hymn when Frederick Oakeley translated it into English from Latin. trIvIa Edison invented the light bulb in 1879... In 1889 his assistant, Edward Johnson, strung the first lights on a Christmas tree. It was during Grover Cleveland’s administration, 1895, that the first White House Christmas tree was decorated with lights. Would like to send condolences to Marie Niewmann on the passing of her father in Ogden. It was a hard time for her and we would like her to know she is in our thoughts and prayers. Chance and Jessica Stewart had their new, adorable little boy, Parker Blake Stewart, blessed today. His father, Chance did the blessing. Attending from out of town were Roger and LeAnne Blake of Erda, Utah (Jessica’s parents) and Delon and Mena Blake who are her grandparent’s. Max Stewart, Chance’s dad was also in attendance. Jessica also had an aunt and uncle and one cousin, her brothers and sisters, many of the Stewart family was there and a lot friends come to help them celebrate this wonderful event. The Bryce Valley Faculty and Staff enjoyed a Christmas social of great food and good company. The meal consisted of a variety of soups in bread bowls, salads and desserts. Released as a Nursery Leader was Sara Syrett with a great big thank you for doing a good job. Congratulations to Alexis Niemann who was baptized this week. She is the daughter of Todd and Nancy Niemann of Tropic. Along with the David Jensen family Arthur and I went to Delta to watch the Drill Team competition. Our granddaughte, Joanna, is on the Richfield HS drill team. It was for 1A, 2A, and 3A girls. It was fun to watch. I hadn’t been to a drill team competition for a few years and things have changed. Now they do such things as hip hop, lyrical, kickline, etc., that I had never seen before. The girls all did a great job. There was only one team from 1A though and that was Altamont. What has happened to the girls in the 1A drill team. We don’t have them anymore or just unable to go this particular weekend. I know Bryce Valley doesn’t have a team but I was sure Panguitch did and other schools. Oh well it was still fun to watch. Cedar HS took the 3A championship and the good sportsman trophy. Juab took the 2A championship trophy. We couldn’t figure how that happened because Millard had two1’s plus a 2 and Juab had 2 1’s and a 3 but they did a 4th dance and got no score there. Go figure. I always thought the judging was skewampus but then that is just me. It was a nice day out. Short column this week.
