Show The Garfield County Insider Page 4 §RjrCOVAIIIIEVIREAVVEWS) =Foirl PANGUITCH 041iiikr Its nice to have a little break between storms, a number of the locals are taking advantage of the nice weather to get some exercise. Over in Iron County they are taking advantage of our 360 days of sunshine to put in a $500 million solar power plant project. These photovoltaic panels will be placed on 650 acres of private property. An Oslo, Norway company is doing the investing in this project, which may be the largest in the Country. These panels convert direct sunlight into electricity, needing just enough water to clean the panels. The land this will be on is next to a Rocky Mountain power substation, and the power plant will generate 100 megawatts, enough to power 80,000 homes. The local benefits for Iron County is this project will employ between 60 and 80 construction workers for each phase of the project. This project will be built in two phases, and will take a couple of years to complete. Southern Utah is rapidly taking the lead for alternate power sources in the USA. With the wind power over in Milford, along with their geothermal pools this will go along way in reducing fossil fuels and dependents on foreign oil. With all of the natural gas that is here in Utah, I think someone is missing the boat, with not converting the autos over to run on it. Natural gas burns cleaner and is better for your motor than gas. The Auto Industries are spending big bucks trying to come up with a practical battery operated car, but so far they are limited in how far they can go and the high cost to own one. I doubt that all of this alternate power will ever have any effect on reducing the gas prices. The oil companies that have a tight rein on our Country (do you know that we subsidize these companies?) will never let this happen. Three weeks ago it was predicted that oil would go above $100.00 a barrel, causing gas to go up to $5.00 a gallon. Well two weeks ago oil prices started to fall and are in the low eighties, because the demand had gone down. So the oil companies, to keep up the price, shut down 5 refineries throughout the country and that is why your pump prices are up. In my opinion, when the President talked about cutting the oil subsidizes, you would have though he was trying to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. Yet these same Legislatures that were doing all the complaining have no qualms about cutting education, the Head Start program and the schools for the deaf and blind. Speaking of complaining, there is a lot of it about our Countries education system. Did you know that there 600,000 foreign students taking advantage of our Universities and Colleges? 200,000 of these student come from India and China. Less than 10% of these foreign students stay here after they obtain their degree. Because of many of our graduate schools haven't room for our students they go to a foreign country to get their gradu- noialakiiiime comb ate degree. Go figure. We had a couple of close calls with a couple of our local citizens last week. Cindy Dodds and her husband Dave have enrolled in the EMT program. The EMTS were practicing taking blood pressure on each other. Cindy's was sky high and it was taking again and it got even higher. They rushed her into the Hospital and ended up life flying her to St. George, where she had a double by-pass operation. Cindy and Dave are recovering nicely. The second case was Richard Miller, who decided to find out first hand how good the EMS program was here in Panguitch. Dick was at Leland's Chevron gas station, to repair their front door, when he decided to die. Thanks to the quick thinking of Eric Houston, who called 911 and a RN Susan Little who started CPR and the rapid response of the EMT's, about 2 minutes, Richard made it. The EMT's hooked him up to the difibulator and the shock started his heart and he too was life flighted to SLC to put in some stints. This took place on Tuesday and Dick was out in his pickup truck cruising the town on Friday. Talk about luck, the Nurse Susan Little works in Kanab and is only in Panguitch on Tuesday's and she and Diane Fullmer had gone to Leland's for their afternoon beverage. The EMT's were working in the fire station and responded really fast. Three Members of the FCCLA club are collecting shoes, to send to poor countries. Their project is called "Soles for the Souls" and you can donate your shoes at the High School, Elementary School, Joe's Main Street Market and at Zions Bank. Check out your closet for those shoes that you aren't using and help with this very worthy project. You have till the end of February. Panguitch wasn't the only place that had problems with the cold weather and the wind last week. Brain Head lost their power and the water damage to the town was over 20 million dollars. Bruce and Diane Fullmer spoke of their trip to Cambodia to visit their relations who are serving a mission there. The people there are very happy, but have to worry where their next meal is coming from. Diane said that there is always a demand for senior missionary companions there. So if you are looking for a place to go where you can make a difference look into Cambodia. Brian and MaryAnn Crum are getting their B&B ( Frank Orton's old home on center street) going starting the first of March. They are giving discounts to Panguitch' people who have guests in town and no room at their inn. Their website www.crumcottage.com Till next week, Mack 0. Ernie and Wynona Henderson took daughter, Dorsie Denny, to St. George so she could catch the shuttle to Las Vegas to meet up with her husband, Kevin, there for a few days. He came up from San Diego to some business meetings and they spent a couple of days in Vegas and then drove back to Henrieville where Dorsie is staying for awhile helping out her sister, Logann Eagar. While Ernie and Wynona were in St. George they visited with friend, Ernie and Zoe Maes prior to their leaving for the MTC as they prepare for a mission in Uruguay. The Henderson's also caught up with son, Mitch and his wife, Pam and baby Tavian. They had a nice visit and then drove back to Cedar City to stay with Alfred and Connie Jepsen. They got a call from daughter, Lynne, who had been in Las Vegas with friends and they met her for lunch and had a nice visit. Then they took care of doctors appointments the next day in Cedar. The Henderson's grandaughter Nikki, plays softball for W. Nevada College out of Carson City. She has been playing ball in St. George at the sports complex there. She is on a scholarship to the college and the Henderson's are by Vicki D. The 5th, 6th and under grades went to Richfield to play in a Basketball Tournament. Our boys won the first day and played the second but lost. It was a very impressive tournament for these young folks. They even had a special ceremony for the teams that took top honors. The boys have been doing very good. They play a game or two every week and next week will be the last game for them. Coaches are Shawn Mortensen and Travis Shakespear. The 7th and 8th grade Basketball team has been working extremely hard this year on staying focused and playing as a team. I am not a Mack Oetting by any means but let me tell you in my own words what I saw on Friday evening. Our girls were behind most of the game then all of a sudden something happened and in the last minute Ashley Nelson threw in a three pointer to bring us ahead by two points, 37-35, followed by Abbagail Harman and Sydney Cornforth bringing in two points more from each of them. We won the Region 20 Tournament by 6 points. The excitement in the gym at Canyon View High School was tremendous, exciting, and well worth the time watching the game. Congratulations girls on a job well done. We could all learn a lesson from them on how to push ahead in adversity. They WON! ! The coaches, Tyson Brinkerhoff and Bart Palmer, did a good job of keeping the girls going, using good strategy and the girls came together as a team and worked hard to win. Wayne did a good job of playing with us and we congratulate them and their coach, Heidi Woolsey on a good game and good sportsmanship. Whitni Syrett and Ashley Nelson were both chosen to be on the All Star Region Team. Way to go girls. Down the line they will be involved in a game to be announced. Jeff Brinkerhoff, the principal was there and was one of the first on the floor to congratulate the girls on their win. On Wednesday the State Play begins in Richfield at the Sevier Valley Center. Good luck and keep up the great teamwork girls. You are SUPER!!! Oh my goodness that was exciting. We are so proud of our boys and girls at Bryce Valley High School. They are great!! |
