Show The Garfield County Insider Page 2 June 24, 2010 ENTER AINMEN 8 EVE SUMMER FUN WITH SCIENCE Kids love summer vacation, but parents often find it difficult to keep them engaged in productive activities. And most kids experience a summer learning slump during their time away from school. According to the National Summer Learning Association, at best, students show little or no academic growth over the summer, and at worst they lose one to three months of learning. It's possible to give kids a fun way to keep up with learning by providing engaging books that feature hands-on activities. Three new books from DK Publishing will help kids of all ages fill their summer with science fun. .18W041(0114 "One Million Things: Space" (July 2010). The Wide Hollow Water Supply Storage Facility construction continues to move forward. After a couple weeks of preparation, the first concrete pour for the new service spillway occurred this week. The concrete pour will continue over the next couple of weeks. Installation has begun of a new 16-inch HDPE drain line that will convey water from the downstream toe of the new dam to the Escalante River. Portions of the trench have been dug and sections of the drain line are fused together. Excavation of bedrock is ongoing in both the left and right abutments to create the keyway for the new dam. Dewatering of the foundation material under the old dam continues. Additional wells are being installed down the centerline of the new dam to allow the water trapped in the foundation to be pumped out. Currently, there is no excavation of foundation materials taking place. The groundwater in the foundation needs to be lowered before excavation will resume. The groundwater needs to be lowered a total of another ten to fifteen feet, depending on the area within the foundation, before all of the foundation can be removed. Excavation of the foundation can only occur when the groundwater surface is demonstrated to be more than five feet below the prevailing excavation surface in the foundation. Once it is demonstrated that the groundwater meets this requirement, excavation of the foundation will continue. potato Valley Lio 3 Town Center Park S KMemerial 7 AM start at the High School.
