SCHOOL WEB SURVEY LAUNCHED — Brian Bremner A web survey and blog has been launched to gather public opinion, receive comments and disseminate information regarding Garfield County public schools. Hosted by www.garfieldkids.org , the website provides opportunities for citizens, parents, teachers, taxpayers, and all interested parties to participate in surveys, ask questions, submit anonymous comments, and provide suggestions to decision makers. Brian Bremner, school board representative and site sponsor, stated, " I have been concerned about two issues: 1) the amount of misinformation and propaganda that is circulated; and 2) the unacceptable level of fear and intimidation that exists regarding expression of one's personal opinion. This site is set up so anyone can use it without fear of retribution or retalliation." In addition to future additions of agenda, minutes, budgets, and other general information about schools in Garfield County, the site includes surveys, comment sections and opportunities to submit written questions. The initial survey requests public input regarding potential budget cuts for fiscal year 2010. Anyone can participate by logging onto www.garfieldkids.org . The public is also encouraged to return often for updated information and results. By Mack Oetting At Region 20 Girls Basketball Tournament, Jimmy Cooper sang the National Anthem prior to the final game on Friday night. I over heard a comment and I agreed with it and wanted to share it with you. The comment went something like this: If this game is as good as Jimmy, we will be in for a great game!!! The three day Basketball Tournament held here in Panguitch was a great success. It takes a whole lot of help to put on these events. Great support from the parents that worked the concession stand, programs that were very professional, teachers taking tickets, the security on hand, and the cleaning of the gym after the games were over all made it an exceptional event. Panguitch and the rest of the region benefit greatly when the tournament is based at one of the region schools. The boys on the other hand go to Cedar City for their tournament and so goes their money. The only money that comes from the boys tournament is from the programs, concession. the gate money goes to Cedar City, what a waste. Panguitch in centrally located and has the seating to handle these tournaments, each year a different school could host the tournament and that way the money could stay in District 20. The old complaint that Panguitch will get the home court advantage, is sad, the best team will win, just ask Piute. It was great to see all the fans from Valley, Escalante, Bryce Valley, Wayne, Milford. Panguitch, and Piute. These fans weren't there last year in Cedar. As many of those that were in attendance, there was still plenty of room for more. If a team doesn't want to host the event, I am sure many will step up. Real Salt Lake came to Panguitch to show off their National Trophy. It was a fun time with all of Panguitch's schools students there, all 500 of them. The MC had the kids rocking and stomping their feet and everyone had a fun time. Real's Mascot Leo was a fun guy who showed off some fun stuff. Mayor Janet Oldham helped unveil the trophy and held it up over her head. Many of the kids were able to get their picture with the trophy Lynae Fletcher has been in the hospital up in Provo for sometime, is now back at home and is doing very well and we hope she will be up and running around soon. Keep up the good stuff. Mack 0. mackoetting@gmail.com DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAY TO APPLY Big game applications due by March 1, 2010 gOYAt WHO WILL YOU NOMINATE? If you're going to apply for a permit to hunt big game in Utah this fall, a wildlife official has some advice: Apply before the last day of the application period. Applications will be accepted at wildlife.utah.gov until 11 p.m. on March 1. "When you apply depends a lot on how much patience you have," says Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. "If you apply before March 1, you should be able to get your application in fast. "If you wait until March 1, it could take longer," she says. "Thousands of hunters wait until the last day to apply. Receiving that much traffic in a short period of time really slows our Web site down." Tutorow says if you do wait until March 1 to apply, make sure you start applying before 11 p.m. "Even if you haven't finished your application by 11 p.m., the system will let you complete your application as long as you don't log out before you've completed it," she says. "If you log out after 11 p.m., and then you try and get back into the system, you'll be out of luck. Starting at 11:01, the only thing you can apply for is a bonus point or a preference point." For more information, call the Utah Wildlife Administrative Services office at 1-800-221-0659, the nearest Division of Wildlife Resources office or the DWR's Salt Lake City office at 801-538-4700.
