Show Page February 18, 201 folAIMITC11 The Winter Olympics in Vancouver Canada has just started and Panguitch High School has already received a bronze Medal. AMERICA'S TOP HIGH SCHOOLS U.S. News and World Report - in collaboration with School Evaluation Services, a K-12 education and data research and analysis business that provides parents with education data- analyzed academic and enrollment data from more than 21,000 public high schools to find the very best across the country. These top schools were placed into gold, silver, bronze or honorable mention categories. Step one determined whether each school's students were performing better than statistically expected for the average student in the factoring in the economically disadvantaged students. The second step determined whether the school's least-advantaged students were performing better than average for similar students in the state. Each school's math and reading proficiency rates for disadvantaged students were compared with the statewide results for these student groups and then with selected schools that were performing better than the state average. Schools that made it through the first two steps became eligible to be judged nationally on the final step, college-readiness performance, using Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate test data as the benchmarks for success, depending on which program was largest at the school. The top 100 schools nationwide were ranked numerically and awarded gold medals. The next 461 topperforming high schools nationwide-based on their college readiness index scores-earned silver medals (4 from Utah). An additional 1,189 high schools in 48 states plus DC were awarded bronze medals (11 from Utah). This award puts Panguitch in the top 9% in the Nation; and one of only 15 schools in the State of Utah to receive this honor. When Mrs. Rember started the AP program at Panguitch High School, she was able to get 4 teachers to give up their summer to learn what it took to put this program into effect. She took a school that was in total disarray and has brought our Panguitch High School to one of the tops in the Country. You saw a couple of weeks ago how many of Panguitch's former students that were on the Dean's list at SUU, I have received a couple more notes on a Dean's list student. Jennifer Perkins daughter of Danny and Michelle Perkins, has made the Dean's List at SUU, Pratt C.0 in Pratt Kansas, and St. Mary's College in Omaha Nebraska; (3 different schools for 4 years). Jeanie and Al Whalen son Andrew was on the Dean's list at Purdue all four years. Jeanie gives all the credit to the teacher's Mack Oetting in Panguitch for rescuing Andrew, who was failing school in Las Vegas. Panguitch and Hatch's finest fire fighters are enrolled in a fire fighter certification class. The class involves 128 hours of classes and lasts for 3 months of giving up their Saturday's. There are 20 of these men and they are to be praised for their dedication to make our area safer. Elaine Baldwin, Claudia Crump, and Pat Oetting went to Parowan to see the progress of the Quilt Walk Statue. Stan Johnson is the sculpture and every time they see his work they come home more excited, dedicated and anxious for the completion of the statue. High Way 89 Committee has given the Statue Committee money to help fund the statue, but until the $$$'s are in their hands, we will continue to fund raise. Permits for Utah's first general statewide turkey hunt go on sale starting Feb. 16. "We're excited," says Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. "For the first time, every hunter who wants to hunt wild turkeys in Utah can hunt." Because the general hunt is brand new, Tutorow says the DWR has received lots of questions from hunters. She provides the following information: • You don't have to get a permit on Feb. 16. General turkey permits are not limited in number, so they won't run out. Permits will be available until the season ends on May 31. • You can buy a general turkey permit and still keep all of your limited-entry turkey bonus points. You won't lose any of your bonus points if you buy a general turkey permit. • If you buy a general turkey permit, you can hunt anywhere in Utah that's open to turkey hunting. • If you obtained a limitedentry turkey permit, you can't obtain a general turkey permit. (You can have only one turkey permit each year.) • You can buy a permit at wildlife.utah.gov starting Feb. 16. Permits will also be available at DWR offices and from more than 300 hunting license agents across Utah. • Two general hunts will be held: • The first hunt is a special youth hunt. This hunt is for hunters who are 15 years of age or younger. It runs April 30—May 2. To participate, young hunters must buy a general statewide hunting permit. Young hunters who drew a limited-entry permit can't participate in the youth hunt. Youngsters who buy a permit for the youth hunt can also use the permit to hunt during Utah's general statewide hunt. That hunt opens May 3. °The second hunt is open to Congratulations to Dan and Linda on your upcoming wedding. Your commitment to each other and to quitting tobacco is an inspiration to us all.
