On Monday, February 12,2007 at 7:24 a.m., a pound of methamphetamine was found in the bottom of a protein powder can; the unlikely find the result of thorough police work by Highway Patrol Trooper Tim Kiser of Garfield County. 22-year-old Jesus Antonio Lopez of Phoenix, Arizona was traveling northbound on U.S. 89 near the Highway 12 turnoff (about 8 miles south of Panguitch) when he was pulled over by Kiser for driving down the center line of the highway. After a routine search, Kiser found cocaine in the car, and Lopez was arrested. On a hunch, Kiser continued his search of the vehicle, having heard before about drugs being hidden in unlikely containers like powdered drink mixes. Kiser found a protein powder container, and hidden in the bottom of the can was over a pound of methamphetamine with a street value of over 31,000 dollars. Lopez admitted to officers he bought the meth with his tax return money, and was heading to Idaho with the intent to sell the methamphetamine there. Lopez is currently being held at the Garfield County Jail, and faces charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of cocaine. Lopez's case will be handled by the U.S. Attorney's office.
